A request for help for one of the Oregon shooting victims.

Posted with Mod permission, for which I am thankful.

My dear friend Amber was one of the victims of the UCC shooting this past Thursday. I’ve known Amber for the better part of 10 years and her life’s goal was and is to help other people. To that end, she was in school studying to be a nurse the day she was nearly killed.

She is married and they have two young daughters. Her husband has a decent job in a local boat-building factory but with her in school their finances are stretched exceedingly thin.

She was shot 8 times by the UCC gunman: hit in her abdomen, right arm, and left shoulder. She spent most of Thursday afternoon, evening, and night in various surgeries and while she in improving in small steps, she is nowhere near out of the woods yet and her future remains uncertain.

A Gofundme page has been established by her niece to help pay for her medical bills and living expenses while her husband takes time off to be with her. I’m asking Dopers to do two things, if they are able:

  1. Donate if possible. I’m aware that many cannot, and if so that’s ok.
  2. Share on Facebook, Twitter, through Email, and any other electronic avenue that exists and that those who view this are comfortable with.

As God as my witness, I don’t know what else to do or how else to help her. Neither I nor anybody else who is not immediate family have been able to see her, but that’s understandable—if difficult.

But what I can do is share this, and hope others will as well. And if you’re the praying type, those would help too.

Done. The request has surpassed its goal, but in my opinion the goal was set too small. Even with good insurance, I’d be surprised if the goal covers the patient’s part of the hospital stay, let alone after care.

Here’s wishing her a speedy and full recovery.

Does not UCC’s insurance cover things like this?

How in potato’s name can you get Mass Shooting And/Or Maniac insurance? IS there such a thing?

Donated.

I wanted to bump this to make sure people saw it.

Workplace violence and duty of care. I’ll note that the Mods aren’t too keen on such discussion at the moment so I’ll leave it at that.

Update: Amber is home, mobile, already doing physical therapy, and seems in as good as spirits as can be expected. Naturally her friends and family are thrilled.

Thanks to everyone for their assistance, both public and private. It means a lot.

Yeah, thanks for telling us, thank you for giving us a chance to help. Best wishes to your friend.

It’s good news that she’s out of the hospital this quickly. Thanks for letting us know.
