A serious question for Sam Stone on Factual Errors

I’ve defended Sam before and I think it’s worth reiterating that he’s an intelligent and informative poster on many issues as long as they don’t involve politics. But yes, as a far-right lunatic he tends to reflect the general hatred of the federal government that is endemic in Alberta, and that hate is cranked up to 11 when the Prime Minister is named “Trudeau”. It’s very tiring.

10 quatloos on “hive mind”

And we’re back to ‘eat the bugs’?

Serious question though, and I’ve asked it before. Since I also grant said poster at least average, and probably above average intelligence, then you -know- he can’t be making the “errors” in mis-attribution of his cites through ignorance. That means, when it comes to political issues he is willingly, repeatedly, and (IMHO) with MALICE attempting to score points by outright lies and deceptions.

Is someone of this sort worthwhile accepting information from on any subject, or valuing their opinions on non-factual manners? Because for me, the answer is NO. I’m not taking advice from someone who will lie in a heartbeat if they think they can score points.

The thing is, there is no disincentive for these people when they spread lies. In fact, the more they do it, the bigger the reward for them.

It’s a challenge, to be sure.

Actual farmer here. What thread, please?

I think the operative phenomenon here is called “motivated reasoning”. It generally only affects subjects on which strongly held beliefs warp the basic sanity of an otherwise logical mind.

Why do people say the World economic forum is pushing socialist views?

here, here, here, here, here, yadayada. Just search Sam_Stone and Netherlands and the nitrogen nonsense comes up over and over.

Thanks.

That looks like the one I got from my BIL some time ago, and took apart for him in an email; though I don’t know whether he was listening. They weren’t specifically after farmers, they were after the (IIRC 5000) largest polluters in the country, a lot of whom happened to be farmers. And they weren’t trying to close down the farms, they were trying to get them to quit polluting, a practice which was among other things damaging other farmers who were trying to do a better job. And if your nitrogen application is running off into other people’s water, it’s not doing your crop a bit of good anyway.

You mean Trudeau doesn’t want us to eat crickets? Huh…

Damned if I know. A lot of people apparently like eating crickets. There are a whole shitload of things available in even a small town grocery around here that I’d never heard of when I was 10. Some of them I like, some of them I don’t but presumably some other people do, some of them I haven’t tried yet. Why pick specifically on crickets?

(Yeah, I know. It’s a ‘libruls want us to eat BUGS!’ memey sort of thing. From people whose traditional diets probably include pig intestines.)

Ah, you don’t want to throw out Mr. Jekyll because Mr. Hyde is an evil ass. Okay, I understand. I don’t agree but that’s not a problem.

Well, he did cause all the inflation in United States. I’m never going to vote for him!
/sarcasm

I should be more like Sam and just accept this as true.

I’ve eaten both tortilla chips and chocolate chips made with cricket flour and it’s delicious. And really good for you.

It’s not like you’re dealing with antennae and mandibles and stuff, it’s ground up and used as a baking ingredient.

Now, straight up eating a whole fried cricket, I dunno about that, but cricket as a food product is enjoyable and sustainable.

I had a cricket flour cookie once…and chirpped it right back up.

When I lived in Japan, I had roasted crickets. They tasted like BBQ flavored potato chips.

Anybody else feel like Sam would love to come and post about how we’re mean to him but he’s knows I’ll say “And there’s step 6!” And he definitely doesn’t want me to be correct.

Eww! I hate BBQ flavored potato chips!

I was open to trying them but not anymore.
