I think a mod or admin should comment on this, because I don’t think it would really speed things up that much. Your record has to be queried anew each time a page is displayed anyway, so it can get your “number of posts” stat, if nothing else.
Sig-free out of respect.

And another - or at least for restricting it to 256 characters or thereabouts. (Yeah, I know in this day and age we don’t need to use powers of two, I just like 'em, okay?)

One one hand, I almost never use my sig.
On the other, I like being able to just click a box and use my sig when I want, rather than having to remember how to spell even more words.
Back on the first hand, if its really going to have an impact on the speed of the boards, dear god, yes, do it.
(adding my sig because I still can…and I forget what it is these days)

I like having the option of a sig. However, since I hardly ever use mine, I can’t really complain if it disappears.
I find the speed of the board is fast when I post first thing in the morning, or non-existant if I try to check it in the middle of the day (nothing will load).
And just in case it does disappear, I’ll use my sig this time to give it a good workout.
Go for it. I won’t miss 'em. I never paid 'em much attention to begin with.
I love sigs. I love everybody’s sig. I love my sig. I change my sig on a regular basis, so that it’s not the same old thing for everybody to read.
Sure, they serve no real purpose. But at the risk of being the lone voice in the crowd, I say, keep them*.
*Unless there is evidence that it would make a significant difference. I don’t think it would be good to lose the sigs if it’ll only make a difference of a second or two. However, if it’ll mean less “this page has no data” and “Connection Time Out” and “Error blah blah blah” than who am I to argue?
Get rid of 'em. Speed, speed, speed! While we’re at it, can we ditch the cute little icons? And the smilies? Is 
really that much better than : ) ?

This seems to be the central crux of the arguement, IMHO. If it speeds up the boards (and I’m sure it will), then the majority seems to say that it’s okay with them. I agree. I guess I’m still considered a newbie, and a lot of the sigs seem like inside jokes and obscure references that I spend more time trying to figure out than I do on the OP (not really yours, Medea’s Child. I understood that one. Made me think of the song “Monkey” by Counting Crows…“just get the world off your shoulders/and close your pretty blue eyes/hey, monkey, what’s life without an occasional surprise…”). I agree with the majority. If it speeds up the boards, then remove 'em!
Well, i’ve used the holy hell out of my sig as it is.
Taking sigs away would give me an excuse to not have to invent a new one.
Seriously, sig abuse seem to have decreased lately, but it’s still a problem. I think Ican make the sacrifice for the good of the message board.

Go ahead and kill 'em. I like mine, I use it, but I’m not that attatched.

Not only could I do without the sigs, I’d be lying if I said I’d miss the post count. That’s GOT to be a drain. Ditto the smileys, etc. This is like someone who makes $50 an hour and never seems to have any money and can’t figure out where it goes. It’s a latte here, a round of drinks there, a few CDs here, and lunch out every day. Little junk adds up. (I’m guessing, of course…I don’t actually know anything about the server except what’s already been discussed and explained several times. That’s what I’m able to grasp of it anyway.)
Another vote in the Speed over Sigs camp. Ditch 'em.
We should have a Sig memorial, or a Sig graveyard someplace, though.
How can I not agree with Fenris?? (and even if it only speeds things up by seconds).
Tho’ I do notice that most of the ones saying pull 'em are those who either don’t have them at all or only very rarely use them. So, it’ll be interesting to hear why those who always use 'em do.
I basically ignore them. It’s kinda like bumber stickers to me - if I’m behind you at a stop light -or in this case waiting for another thread to load up- I’ll read it ‘cause there ain’t nothin’ else to do, but I generally don’t bother to read 'em at all.
How about putting 'em in your profile??? would that be an option?
