Dump them, and the posters they road in on!
I’m in favor of going sig-free. I mean, just uncheck that box. Woohoo. Feels good, doesn’t it?
Now, smilies, on the other hand, I’d miss…
I’m of the “not if it’s only a few seconds” mindset. Is there any estimate, mods, on how much speed will be gained? (especially in that godawful early-afternoon period)… and is there any new word as to people pitching in a few bucks to upgrade the servers? I’d much rather cure the illness than treat a symptom, if ya know what I mean.
go for it!
Ditch em.
But how much time would we be gaining?
(but I really like my sig…)
It’s worth a shot. If it turns out that the time saved is minimal, bring it back.

I like my sig, and I use it almost every time I post. But if it really will make a significant difference in the speed of the boards, I say ditch 'em.
I’m with wring on this one. Why do some people like them and use them repeatedly? ::that sounds snider than I mean it to::. I just don’t get the point of repeating a one note joke for months, years on end. Amusing once, yeah but more than that? I like the suggestion that people put their dearly beloved sigs in their profiles
I’m fond of smilies but if it speeds up the boards, then yeah I’m OK with them going. Post counts I don’t give a toss about either.
I’m with everybody else - if eliminating sigs will noticeably improve the board’s performance, just do it.
Ditch 'em. I use mine only out of habit, and it wouldn’t offend me if it weren’t an option anymore.
Fine, that will save me the strain wondering if mine is clever/profound/aesthetically pleasing enough for public consumption.
“I say, if a novelty Christmas song is funny the first time, it’s funny the next hundred times too!” - Calvin (not, sadly, the theologian)
I can’t disagree with this, but I note I spend more time on my sig than I do reading anyone else’s. As for post counts, you’ll have to pry it from my cold dead hand. In forty years time do you realise how cool we’ll look when we reach a million?
Alright, maybe the line between “cool” and “bored” is getting blurrier by the year…
Toss the sigs. To supplement their removal, I would suggest that everyone who just NEEDS their sig fix to become accustomed to the wonderful little program known as “Notepad” (or it’s Mac equivalent, if there is one). Just load up a window, pop the sig you wanna use in there, and just C&P it each time you want it shown.
(Adding my sig just 'cuz I think Roger Waters is hellacool…)
Oh OK, dump the sigs if it slows down the board. Don’t smilies REALLY slow things down too? (Calling whatshisname, the Chief guy who hates 'em)…
::sigh::
How can I not agree with wring?
I like the idea of putting them in your profile! Those interested in each other’s collection of witty epigrams would be a mere button click away, and those of us…less interested…could ignore them.

Of course, even more than that, I like the idea of improperly added [ quote] and [ /quote] brackets being deleted from fouled up posts by wise and compassionate moderators.

And even more that that, I appreciate Euty, who so kindly obliged by fixing the coding nightmare that was my first post. THANKS EUTY!!!

Yes, let’s try dumping the sig option.
Perhaps we can also inform some people that when they quote, they don’t always need to quote the entire post, just the pertinent points that they are addressing. A post that’s 23 lines of quote, followed by a one line reply, is usually not necessary, and only eats bandwidth.
I don’t really see the point of having a sig at all. I wouldn’t miss them if they were gone, and I would definitely welcome faster loading times; however…
Don’t touch the post counts, or the registration date for that matter. I like seeing how long people have been here and how many posts they’ve made. I sat here for a few minutes thinking about why I like knowing so much, but I can’t think of a reason. I just like useless statistics, I guess.
MO: toss 'em if it’ll make an appreciable difference.
BTW, what would happen to old sigs? I’m attaching mine to this thread just for the heck of it . . . if they’re done away with, what happens to the old posts that had sigs on 'em?
How about a special thread dedicated to signatures?
