I ask a simple question in IMHO, which seems to be a mere step above MPSIMS in earth-shattering topics, and the SUV owners seem so testy. Here’s to your rusting Detroit iron and wasteful ways. 
Sorry, but your stay at the SDMB will be happier if you accept that even (or perhaps especially) the most indefensible of actions/ideas/groups have ardent defenders here.
In particular, I’ve seen it remarked that people are more likely to post a response if they disagree with the OP. (So the person commenting was commenting on Sentient Meat’s Political Compass threads in GD, not threads in IMHO. The principle still applies.)
Automotive topics are one of many of our hot button topics. That said, I’d be much happier if all those SUVs vanished–though not if they were replaced by MiniVans, Pick-ups and other large view blocking vehicles. I drive a Saturn.
PS. There’s no such thing as a simple question.
PPS. Would you have been happier if no one had bothered to respond to your post?

Also, never assume everyone will know what you mean when you say anything.
Example: In one thread I made a reference to the “old” Tonight Show meaning the one with Johnny Carson. A couple of posters came along and mentioned the Jack Paar and Steve Allen versions.
Even if you specify something in your OP, don’t be surprised if some posters don’t read/care/comprehend.
Example: In an old CS thread, I asked about songs that mentioned specific times of the day in their titles and got responses with “morning” as responses.
Bottom line: don’t let it bug you. If you do, you’ll end up getting banned over the stupidest things and you’ll make the baby Og cry.
Perhaps it’s because there is a certain group of dopers who adopt a holier-than-thou attitude about their small vehicles and choose to cast aspersions at and make foolish generalizations about others. I drive a van. It’s large. I can’t carry my tools in a Mini-Cooper. Those who don’t like that are cordially invited to kiss my ass.

I posted to that thread and I didn’t think that anyone was “testy”. You asked a group of people that already have an SUV whether they are willing to make a substantial life change based on the cost of gas alone. That most said no shouldn’t come as a surprise at all. Some of us even explained why it wouldn’t work out economically in many cases.
How about posting this one" “Northerners, are you considering selling your house and moving now that the price of heating oil is going up?”

Ah, therein lies the rub, don’t it? We are, as a group, trying to dance as close as we can to the line between “Making conversation” and “Attention whoring” that the only thing worse than a thread in which we are disagreed with is one that is ignored.
(FTR: prefer lower cars, I drive as close to the speed limit as I can but move over for a faster driver if there is some place I can move over to safely but screw him otherwise, I like them but think there should be some control on their purchase and use, I go either way, I dislike him, Picard, PC but Macs are fun, I could stand to lose quite a bit but don’t like being reminded by others, it has its good and bad points, and I have daughters so I never had to decide but I prefer being cut myself.
