A Song of Ice and Fire (SPOILERS)

I was wondering if anyone thought that George R.R. Martin’s epic novel series “A Song of Ice and Fire” was in any way linked to “Fire and Ice” by Robert Frost.

My current theory is that R’hllor and “the other” are the forces of fire and ice fighting each-other in a possibly never ending battle. The humans are caught up in this battle because they are the most influential beings on the planet. In other words, neither is good or bad.

There could be other forces which may or may not be related - The Drowned God as a Ocean/Sea force. There is a green force too - the children of the forest.

I dunno…the theory is half baked in my head right now - help me form it. It’s early and there is little coffee yet in my blood.

I have only read 3 of the books and have not read them since publication(I think the third one came out in 2000). Anyway, my memory of the title and its meaning are this, though again, I am most likely totally wrong.

We have the war between the humans, the fight for the Iron throne. This is basically the fire.

We have the war that is coming down from the North, the zombies(white walkers), which is the ice.

Heh, I am probably way wrong. Actually, I think the Daenarys visits a temple in book two or three and the phrase “Song of Ice and Fire” is said to her in a vision or something. Am I right about that? It’s been years.

By the way, your title could be way more descriptive than it is.

I had always thought that ASOIAF is about how Daenerys’ dragons are ultimately going to battle the white walkers for supremacy of the 7 Kingdoms. Literally fire versus ice. And that all of the books thus far are an entertaining opening set of stanzas as to how the two forces are going to come together.

I’ve since come to think that the books are being deliberately written so that there are numerous ways in which you can put ice against fire, so that it is a running thread overall in different ways (the Starks from the frozen North versus the Lannisters from warmer climes, etc).

If it is literally going to be dragons vs ice zombies, Martin has to step the ice zombies’ game up. There have been a couple of mentions of ice spiders serving as mounts. That’s a start. Otherwise, I’m picturing the dragons three melting the white army anticlimatically outside of arrow and spear range.

Yeah, I think that is why I have reverted to it being an overall theme rather than the main thrust being dragons v zombies. The zombies don’t seem powerful enough to take on a dragon. Unless it’s going to be a sheer weight of numbers argument and the dragons make some dumb mistakes (like landing near the zombies) and get overrun by thousands of combatants.

Well, what got me thinking about this is that some of the powers that each camp seems to possess are similar.

For example; Craster sacrifices all the male born children to the White-walkers. It sounds terrible, but Mellisandre is sacrificing people to R’hllor.

Also, both groups seem to have some control over death. Thoros of Myr is able to resurrect people by breathing life back into them. The reanimated are NOT the same as they were before death. Similarly, the white-walkers are able to bring the dead to life as wights.
