A Sports Museum in NYC.

So, it turns out a friend’s wife is the curator to a new sports museum in NYC. The web page is pretty sparse, but it looks like it could be interesting. ( www.sportsmuseum.com )

It seems to have a gallery for each major sport, one for the Olympics, and then a bunch of random stuff like mixed martial arts and so on. She’s working 14 hour days, looks like heck, but the place is finally open.

Now she just has to keep dealing with trying to get new exhibits, useless interns, packing up the exhibits to museum standards when done…

I dunno, anyone know anything about museums and sports? I don’t think I’ve ever seen a museum about sports in general before.

I was excited about this, and then I saw the admission price – $27 for adults/$20 for kids seems very high to me. Just for comparison, the American Museum of Natural History is $15 for adults, $8.50 for kids.

The various Halls of Fame for each individual sport serve as museums, but this sounds more like an all-in-one stop. There was an article in The NY Times about it: Afternoon at the (New Sports) Museum. It is going to be a for profit museum, which may account for the admission fee.

It is for-profit, which is part of the issue in regards to getting decent help, too. But I think the discrepancy in ticket prices also has something to do with a lack of endowments and startup costs.
