A sports Quiz

Hi,

Last year I was given the task of writing a quiz for my family at christmas.

I kinda got a buzz out of it, something I enjoyed doing (lots of music, laughing etc)

Anyway I am doing one this year and I have got a round on sport
Though some of you might like it.
If you want to answer please put answers in a spoiler box, just incase.

 2. In which sport is it illegal to play left handed?

 6. Cricket: How many different ways can a batsman be ‘out’? 7, 9 or 11, ?

 7. What is the sport in which neither the spectators nor the participants know the score or the leader until the contest ends?

Baseball

12, assuming defaulting doesn’t count as winning the set

14

submarine racing?

 1. Lennox Lewis?

 2. Boxing
1. Who was the last F1 British world champion? Lewis Hamilton

 1. In which sport is it illegal to play left handed? Handball?

 2. Which boxer won gold for Canada in Seoul in 1988? Lennox Lewis

 3. What is the sport in which neither the spectators nor the participants know the score or the leader until the contest ends? Boxing

 4. What is the only sport in which the ball is always in the possession of the defensive team, and the offensive team can score without touching the ball? Baseball AND cricket are both correct

Don’t know number 4, but I think I’ve got all the rest:

1 - Jenson Button

2 - Polo (horse not water)

3 - 16 (15 reds + 15 blacks for the first 120 points, and another black to finish)

5 - Alan Shearer

6 - 11 (Caught, Bowled, LBW, Stumped, Run Out, Hit Wicket, Hit the Ball Twice, Handled the Ball, Obstructing the Field, Timed Out, Retired)

7 - Boxing

8 - Baseball (not only can the offense score without touching the ball, but it’s illegal for them to touch the ball at any time except when they get hit by a pitch)

9 - 12 (NOT 24 - this was a very infamous blunder on the UK version of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? - they didn’t realize that you can win points due to your opponent double faulting)

10 - 14
Wow, I only know a couple of these.

Jenson Button, 2009-10 season.

I really don’t know, but I’ll guess squash.

I’m sure there’s more than one answer to this, but I think boxing fits. Other martial arts should as well.

Baseball, of course.
4x6=24.

ETA: …I didn’t think of double-faults. Damn.
Regarding question 8,in cricket the batting team is considered to be defending, while the bowlers are referred to as “the attack”. So it doesn’t really work for cricket.
1. Who was the last F1 British world champion?

Jensen Button

 1. In which sport is it illegal to play left handed?

Polo

 1. Snooker: in order to achieve a 147 break, how many blacks need to be potted?

16

 1. Which boxer won gold for Canada in Seoul in 1988?

No idea

 1. Football/Soccer: Who is the Premier League’s all time top scorer?

No idea. Bet he’s not English, though.

 1. Cricket: How many different ways can a batsman be ‘out’? 7, 9 or 11, ?

11 (at least theoretically)

 1. What is the sport in which neither the spectators nor the participants know the score or the leader until the contest ends?

Boxing for a start. Does Sumo count?

 1. What is the only sport in which the ball is always in the possession of the defensive team, and the offensive team can score without touching the ball?

No idea.

 1. In theory what is the minimum number of strokes you need to win a set in tennis.

None. One player retires during the warmup.

 1. In tournament play what is the maximum number of clubs you are allowed for a round of golf? 14,15 or 16?

 2. I figure I’ve got a 1 in 3 chance of being right
Why? Is it because you’re defending… that little piece of wood atop the other, bigger pieces of wood?

Polo

There’s another answer to question 2.

Field hockey, just called “hockey” here.

 1. Who was the last F1 British world champion?

Jenson Button.

 1. In which sport is it illegal to play left handed?

Lennox Lewis

 1. Football: Who is the Premier League’s all time top scorer?

Alan Shearer (260)

 1. Cricket: How many different ways can a batsman be ‘out’? 7, 9 or 11, ?

There are 11 ways to go out in cricket.
1)Run Out
2)Bowled
3)LBW
4)Caught
5)Stumped
6)Timed Out (Once one batsman is dismissed, next batsman should come & take strike within 3 minutes)
7)Handle the ball (picking the ball up)
8)Hit Wicket
9)Obstructing the field (pushing a fielder)
10)Hitting the ball twice
11)Retired Out

 1. What is the sport in which neither the spectators nor the participants know the score or the leader until the contest ends?

Boxing

 1. What is the only sport in which the ball is always in the possession of the defensive team, and the offensive team can score without touching the ball?

Baseball

 1. In theory what is the minimum number of strokes you need to win a set in tennis.

12

 1. In tournament play what is the maximum number of clubs you are allowed for a round of golf? 14,15 or 16?

14

I wasnt expecting such a response, the answers above are what I had in mind, but I like some of youe solutions.

Dave

I’ll give these a go before looking at the thread - I’m sure that they will all have been answered by now, but I’m interested to see how my score compares!
1. Who was the last F1 British world champion? Jenson Button, last year.

 1. In which sport is it illegal to play left handed? Hockey.

 2. Snooker: in order to achieve a 147 break, how many blacks need to be potted? Usually 16, although if you start the break with a free ball, you can do it with as few as 9.

 3. Which boxer won gold for Canada in Seoul in 1988? Lennox Lewis

 4. Football/Soccer: Who is the Premier League’s all time top scorer? Alan Shearer

 5. Cricket: How many different ways can a batsman be ‘out’? 7, 9 or 11, ? I’m guessing 11 - I know it’s more than you think it might be!

 6. What is the sport in which neither the spectators nor the participants know the score or the leader until the contest ends? I’m going for poker, though perhaps that’s not really a sport, and there may be a better answer.

 7. What is the only sport in which the ball is always in the possession of the defensive team, and the offensive team can score without touching the ball? I think cricket meets these requirements, but so does baseball.

 8. In theory what is the minimum number of strokes you need to win a set in tennis. 12 - 4 aces in each of your service games gives you three games, and you can win on your opponents service games without playing a stroke if they double-fault every time.

 9. In tournament play what is the maximum number of clubs you are allowed for a round of golf? 14,15 or 16? 14.
ETA: hmm, looks like I scored 9!

You missed 2 and 7 for sure.

I certainly accept I missed 7, but I think my (and others’) answer for 2 is as valid as the given one.

AFAIK, You can play hockey left-handed.

Ice hockey, sure. The answer should have said *field *hockey.

And “hockey” = “field hockey” here in England - QED! Thanks to the OP for a fun quiz.
