A strange call

This morning about 8 am I heard the phone ringing. I’d been up late watching the Giants lose to the Astros and Dopin’ so this was a bit too early, but struggled up from the depths of slumber to get the phone…

Me: um, hello?
Guy: Hi, I’m just calling to let you know the 9:00 am game this morning has been rained out.
Me: uh, okay… who is this?
Guy: This is John from Brian’s team. There’s no game today.
Me: okay, bye.
Guy: bye.

What made this particularly strange is that I have no idea who Brian or John are. I do play soccer, and was planning to play this morning at 10 am. But this is a regular weekly pick up game featuring a number of expats that live in the area. I don’t think there is a John or Brian, and they always play at 10 am. They even play in the snow if it’s not too deep, so I imagine that they played this morning, as it wasn’t even raining here.

I can only assume that this was a wrong number that serendipitously reached someone who had also planned to play soccer this morning.

Anybody else ever have an experience like that? Being half asleep only made it a little more surreal.

I once called my friend Tracy, and was told by the person that answered “Sorry, Tracy’s at work”. We were about twelve at the time!

Once got a five minute phone message about someone’s new-born child. Birth wieght, name, and far too many details about the delivery. I wonder if they ever realized they had the wrong number, and if it freaks them out that strangers know so much about their kid.

One of the advantages of being to lazy to record a message, I guess.

Well I did get a call this week from a woman looking for her smucker…as far as I know…I didn’t meet the description…
