A technical memory upgrade question

Ok, I’ve got a laptop computer that runs PC2700 (333Mhz) ram. I constantly shop on Ebay for stuff, but I find that the more allowance your computer can make for you the better a deal you can get on a particular item not to mention end-up often with a better product.

Now I have studied a bit via Wikipedia on the topic and it says that even DDR2 can sometimes work on machines that come OEM with DDR since the concept is pretty consistent. I’m not trying to make such a large leap though- I’m just wondering if a computer for this situation that has a 400Mhz Fsb can handle PC3200 (400Mhz) memory.

I do understand that the computer quite possibly would never run the memory @ 400Mhz and instead might clock back the speed to 333Mhz, but if the memory is cheaper on Ebay this gives me a greater variety of memory to look into.

I really suspect that PC3200 should work, but there’s nothing like finding out the hard way that you took a gamble and lost.

So what do you computer folks think about this?

DDR2 in a DDR slot? Probably not as the notch won’t line up. (It’s that way on desktops but i’m not sure about notebooks)

DDR3200 in a DDR2700 slot? Should not be a problem.

Buying memory on ebay? Better off going to newegg, or the like. for the 5-10 bucks more you’ll pay, you get a return policy if it has issues, and a valid reseller should you ever need to invoke the warranty, which on most memory is lifetime.

I agree with da_pope on all counts. DDR2 will not fit a DDR slot no matter how hard you jam it in. I never computer stuff on ebay, NewEgg is faster and has a return policy that can’t be beat.
