A Thread of Small, Random Kindnesses

Probably been done before, but I’m sure we all have some new nice, feel-good moments to talk about. Either something done for you or that you did for someone else. Doesn’t matter. Let’s make each other smile.

Mine: Today is garbage day, and I forgot to set my garbage can out on the curb last night. Got up this morning to go do it, and my garbage can was… gone. Not where I always leave it, beside the house. But there it was, out on the curb, empty.

My garbage men knew that I always have that one can and came up to the house to get it for me. They certaily didn’t HAVE to do that, but it was very much appreciated. I called the office and let their supervisor know that it was appreciated.

Next?

A guy ahead of me in line at the sandwich shop today had $5.10 worth of food. I gave him a dime so he wouldn’t have to break a large bill.

I went to Whole Foods last night to look for a specific salad dressing. I couldn’t find it in the salad dressing aisle and didn’t see where else they might have salad dressing.

When I was checking out the checker asked if I found everything ok. I said “actually no, I was looking for this salad dressing…” I told him what kind it was and he called someone to go fetch it from me (from the produce section!) and I finished my checkout at the customer service stand.

Yeah that’s just customer service but it was still kindness!

An older woman using a walker got off the train at the same time as me and I offered to help carry the walker down the long, steep stairs for her. She was quite appreciative.

Was it Sass?

It’s happened a few times: I’ll be in line at the grocery store, and I’ll be buying just one or two items. The person in front of me will be buying a whole cart’s worth of items, and will let me go ahead of them in line.

I’ve done it the other way, too - one time I was going to mail a lot of things at the post office, and the guy behind me was only mailing one thing, so I let him go ahead of me.

Nice thread idea, PapSett.

I thought it was an unwritten grocery store rule. If you have a cart full and a guy walks up behind you with an onion and a bottle of barbecue sauce he gets to go ahead of you. My grandparents did it that way, and my mom did it that way. I thought everybody did.

I was in the grocery store Saturday evening and it seemed unusually crowded. I wasn’t doing a huge trip, just there for some specific sales. Maybe half a cart full. I had started unloading my cart when a man stepped up behind me with only a bottle of pain reliever. I said “You need to go ahead of me. I have all these coupons” (and brandished my fist full of coupons to illustrate my point). He thanked me. Finished up and headed for the door. He had gotten pretty far away when he turned on his heel, came back, thanked me again and handed me all the coupons that the register spat out at him saying “I never use coupons.” They were good ones, too! Thanks Grocery Store Guy! I hope whoever needed the ibuprofen is feeling better.

I do a lot of errands before work, including quick trips to the grocery store. It’s a lot easier to just run in at that time and get the one lemon I need for the recipe I want to fix for dinner than it is after work. Often you can just tell somehow that the person who just walked up is on her way to work. And from the anxious look on her face I can guess she has to be there by 9:00. I don’t start work until 10:00. I let a lot of people go ahead of me in the mornings. People seem so surprised.

My neighbor called me when I was on my way to work yesterday. Two of my dogs had slipped out of the yard (the wind had blown open a gate that wasn’t latched). I thanked him and told him I’d turn around and get them. He chased them down for me instead and put them back in my yard. Kept me from being an hour late to work. I heart my neighbors.

On the flip side, one dark night I’m driving home and the neighbor calls me. “Are you home yet?” Nope, on the way. What can I do? His tractor had died in the gate to one of his goat paddocks and he needed me to drive my tractor over there to pull his out. Working by flashlight in the dark we got his tractor started and moved out of the gate. My neighbors heart me.

One day when I was driving home and elderly man carrying several bags of groceries fell on the sidewalk. Other people kept on driving but I stopped and helped him up, got him in my truck and drove him home. I helped him carry his bags to the door. I tried to get a phone number so I could call family for him but he didn’t want anyone to know.

A kid in my daughter’s high school has bedbug crazy fundie parents. At some point they discarded *all *his high school memorabilia, citing some sin or another.

Mizpullin has acquired another letter jacket for him, and is (unknown to the fundies) managing to gather every patch and contest award that would have been on his original. She and another gal are conspiring to get everything sewed into place and approximate the original as much as they can. This is being prepared for a graduation present.

Makes me want to marry her all over again.

I haven’t punched anyone in the face today

Ok on a more serious note I held not only one but two doors open for someone yesterday.

That’s very sweet! Your wife must be a great person. I had a co-worker whose mother converted to Jehovah’s Witness when the girl was in HS, after her father had died. The Jehovah’s Witness kept coming to offer “consolation” and suddenly the mother converted. The girl came home from school one day and was told she was no longer allowed to wear pants, to celebrate the holidays, etc. When the co-worker married, the mother refused to attend the wedding because it wasn’t held in a JW church.

I’m lovin’ this! Makes me feel like there may be hope for ther himan race after all. Keep 'em coming!

A few weeks ago I was running late, there was a freezing blizzard, my car was broken down, AND Tucker escaped the fence while my boss was on her way to pick me up for work. I was wandering around the neighborhood in this incredible howling Arctic wind (my wet hair was literally frozen!) in my work clothes, calling this crazy dog who was godknowswhere.
I called my friend/neighbor and left her the most embarrassing, pitiful message asking her to NOT leave the house for this, but IF she was on her way to work, could she keep an eye out for Tucker? I could barely even talk because I was crying and the wind was taking my breath away and I was hustling through the damn weather as fast as I could.
About three minutes later, a car pulled up beside me, and there was my friend, in her pajamas. She said, “Get in, I didn’t have time to find my glasses so you look and I’ll drive!”
We found him 25 minutes later, just as my boss arrived. Thank you, Jamie, you are the best.

Picking up things a girl drops by accident. If she’s a looker, I pick the item up, and make a motion to put it in my pocket (signifying a change in ownership.) They find it cute.

I gave a 17 year old pregnant girl a bunch of baby things today - two sacks of clothes, a nice crib set, baby bath tub, and a play gym. During out conversation I was able to find out a little more about her situation and what else she needs before the baby gets here. I will keep looking for stuff to help her out. She was very appreciate of getting (gently) used items- I can’t wait to help her out with a baby gift later.

Last week during a minor snowfall, an elderly lady was walking with a walker out of the Office Depot.

First, the Office Depot guy carrying her computer quickly delivered it to her vehicle and then went back to escort her personally to her car. Poor kid didn’t even have a coat on but he stayed with her the whole way.

Second, I cleaned the snow off her car windows for her.

Lastly, she was pleasantly thankful.

A good day was had by all.

This didn’t involve another human, but one day there was a bird trapped in the lobby outside my office. The windows were closed. I opened the window furthest from it, thinking I’d have to chase it around, but it seemed to know. Once I started walking towards it, it flew straight for the window and escaped.

I had a handful of change but the parking meter would only take quarters. I put the 2 quarters I had (which gave me 24 minutes. wtf!? 24 minutes?) and was going to hope for the best. As I was walking across the parking lot, I stopped two women heading to their car and asked if I could exchange some of my dimes & nickels for any quarters they might have. They dug out their wallets and handed me what they had, $1.50 in quarters, and refused my efforts to pay them back.
