I find myself, in the days of Blink 182 and Britney Spears, waxing nostalgic for the early 90’s. Particularly 91-93. I know there are people who get annoyed at that, especially since it’s still fresh in most people’s minds. But I miss it.
I was a junior in highschool in 1991. My taste in music had already branded me a loser. I was into The Smiths, Siouxsie and the banshees and The Cure. But this grunge/ alternative/ modern rock (call it what you will) movement gave me a chance to thumb my nose at everyone. they were coming into my world. Or so I thought at the time.
The hair metal bands were fading, the boy bands were losing their luster and there was this explosion of new sounds. Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Sound Garden. But not just grunge. Bands like Nine Inch Nails, Ministry, Fishbone, Rollins Band, Cracker and a veritable rainbow of sounds and styles, were just coming out of the woodwork. I felt like like this was new, historic and music was on the fast track to new levels and I was along for the ride. But as fast as it came, it faded away.
It's now 2001, the boy bands are back, and cheap, beer chugging rap-rock is the hair metal of today. I almost never listen to the radio. I find myself drifting back into old CD's and mix tapes made by ex-girlfriends. I search the internet for forgotten ditties by forgotten bands like The Candyskins, Material Issue or Dinosaur Jr. Every time I pick up a magazine I'm reminded that it is the tenth anniversary of Nirvana's "Nevermind" and I miss it.
