So I’m thinking, “Hmmm, maybe I should watch LOST, which I’ve never seen. Maybe I’ll buy the DVD so I can catch up on earlier episodes. Or maybe I’ll watch HOUSE. Or maybe DEADWOOD” yyybbb, when it occurred to me that I could probably judge which TV series I’ll enjoy by whether they’re also enjoyed by people who share my tastes in TV shows.
So in the interests of science, I would like to invite my fellow dopers to list
A current TV drama (or dramas) they really enjoy (never miss an episode, tape or TIVO, rewatch episodes, will be pissed when it goes off the air, etc.)
a current TV comedy (or comedies) they really enjoy
A drama (etc.) that was discontinued in the recent past which they miss and remember fondly
A comedy (etc.) that was discontinued in the recent past which they miss and remember fondly
and 6) same as 4 & 5, but for the more distant past.
at least one TV show they’ve watched a few episodes of and were puzzled why anyone would watch this dreck.
Hopefully, if we get enough responses, people will connect with others’ choices (“Hey, those were my favorite shows too,” and decide to watch one of the person’s other current choices.) At the end 8) please list a show or two you’ve been considering tuning in to, and ask if that’s also a show that your TV-twins watch.
So–me first:
THE WEST WING and ER
CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM
NYPD BLUE
SEINFELD
HILL STREET BLUES and LA LAW
TAXI and CHEERS
KING OF QUEENS, MARRIED WITH CHILDREN, COMMANDER IN CHIEF
Um. None. Although I used to watch a lot of All My Children, which I don’t think really fits what you were looking for. Does Anime count? Card Captor Sakura (the Japanese version, not the Americanized version) had some pretty hefty dramatic moments in it…
I’d say the Simpsons, although I’ve sort of fallen off my regular watching… no reason (well, actually a big reason, it’s called a “computer game”)… Although it’s not quiate a comedy, I’d also have to say COPS.
The last drama I enjoyed that actually isn’t shown any more would be Twin Peaks. I guess that sort of had dramatic moments.
I can’t think of any.
Ditto.
Discontinued but airing in reruns on PBS in my locale, “The Last of the Summer’s Wine”.
Do you really want me to list them all? Seinfeld for starters, Friends, Buffy the Vampire Slayer (beyond staring at wossername, can someone PLEASE tell me why this is so popular?), um, Babylon 5, TJ Hooker, WKRP in Cincinnati… Sheesh, the list goes on and on and on and on…
No, I’m not trying to provoke a flame war here with my first few choices, I just never seemed to “get” what everyone else found so enthralling about these shows…
There’s no shows I tape if I’m not going to be home, but shows I currently watch regularly:
Dramas: Medium (yeah, embarrassing), NCIS, Cold Case
Comedies: None
Recent vintage dramas: I’ve given up on ER and West Wing (only watched the first two seasons); American Dreams (yeah, embarrassing)
Recent vintage comedies: I watched Frasier almost to the end, which is unusual for me with a long-running show
Classic dramas: Murder One (single season, single-story drama from Steven Bochco); St. Elsewhere; Picket Fences; Northern Exposure, LA Law in its heyday
Classic comedies: The Muppet Show, Mary Tyler Moore, Dinosaurs, Sports Night (etc., etc., etc.)
Absolutely don’t get: Lost, Alias, Everybody Loves Raymond
Night Court was a Drama to you? You need to get out more. “In tonight’s episode, Harry must decide to impose the death penalty on a psychotic cannibal serial killer who is also a mother of six on welfare, but he slips on a banana skin.”
A current TV drama (or dramas) they really enjoy (never miss an episode, tape or TIVO, rewatch episodes, will be pissed when it goes off the air, etc.) Lost, Deadwood, Battlestar Galactica
a current TV comedy (or comedies) they really enjoy The Office, My Name is Earl, South Park, Family Guy
A drama (etc.) that was discontinued in the recent past which they miss and remember fondly Firefly
A comedy (etc.) that was discontinued in the recent past which they miss and remember fondly Arrested Development, Futurama (notice a Fox theme?)
at least one TV show they’ve watched a few episodes of and were puzzled why anyone would watch this dreck. The War at Home, all ABC and CBS sitcoms

Huh. Can’t really think of any. It feels like I’ve been watching The Sopranos forever.
A comedy (etc.) that was discontinued in the recent past which they miss and remember fondly
Seinfeld. In fact, I still watch it almost daily. And Friends.
and 6) same as 4 & 5, but for the more distant past.
Still can’t think of any
Can’t think of any here either
at least one TV show they’ve watched a few episodes of and were puzzled why anyone would watch this dreck.
House, Desperate Housewives
please list a show or two you’ve been considering tuning in to, and ask if that’s also a show that your TV-twins watch.
Rome, Entourage
1) A current TV drama (or dramas) they really enjoy House is the only one I watch I think.
a current TV comedy (or comedies) they really enjoy The Simpsons, Scrubs and Arrested Cevelopment. I pissed myself at Seven Periods With Mr Gormsby but I’m sure you don’t get many New Zealand sitcoms.
A drama (etc.) that was discontinued in the recent past which they miss and remember fondly
Can’t think of one.
A comedy (etc.) that was discontinued in the recent past which they miss and remember fondly
Last weekend I saw, by accident, the second episode of Wonderfalls on Sunday afternoon TV. I was amazed to discover that only 4 episodes aired on FOX. It was pretty good.
and 6) same as 4 & 5, but for the more distant past.
I think most things died when their time was up, however another 30 years of Cheers would have been nice.
at least one TV show they’ve watched a few episodes of and were puzzled why anyone would watch this dreck.
I watched the first episode and a half of Lost and about the same amount orf Desparate Housewives and found it more than enough.

The Rockford Files, Magnum P.I., Hill Street Blues
7) at least one TV show they’ve watched a few episodes of and were puzzled why anyone would watch this dreck. Roseanne, All in the Family
Current comedy: I’m scratching my head here. Brainiac Science Abuse is OK after a few drinks. Or is that a science show? QI which is really a sort of twister quiz show.
Recently cancelled drama: Does Enterprise count? But only the latest series.
Spaced, Futurama, Black Books.
Old comedy: Sledge Hammer (now out on DVD - hooray!) Who’s Line is it Anyway? Early Red Dwarf. Yes Minister. Jeeves and Wooster.
Old drama: The Rockford Files, Trek (any flavour).
