I thought I’d add that there’s an older SDMB thread on this subject that’s over a decade old:
No better conclusions in that thread, except for two links to Japanese universities that supposedly grade on an SABCD scale. One link is broken, and the other is to a page in Japanese. My grasp of the language isn’t good enough to translate it, I haven’t tried a machine translation yet.
