It’s not balanced. The chocolate flavor overpowers everything else.
It could use 10-15% less chocolate and 10-15% more vanilla. The cherry flavor is virtually nonexistent.
I’ve seen reviews where folks have added vanilla coffee creamer or cream soda to it. But when I drink a soda I want to just pop the tab and drink, not play mad scientist.
I saw some at our local Safeway last week. Maybe I’ll try it.
BTW, I bought some Shasta Chocolate Delight(sp?) at Bi-Mart a couple of weeks ago. I liked it, Tastes kinda like I remember an egg cream tasting. Kinda. (It’s been a long, long time.) Chocolate with a hint of vanilla-cream-something.
That’s basically what the A&W soda tastes like. It took me forever to figure out what I was tasting, and I realized it was almost exactly like a bottle of Yoo-hoo, which is pretty much a faux egg cream. I always liked Yoo-hoo as a kid.
A friend of mine pointed out that the new A&W is great but only when cold. Very cold, nearly ice-cold. Then it’s delicious. If it warms up at all it doesn’t taste nearly as good. I agree.
I’ve only had the zero sugar version of the soda though, as I don’t drink sugary sodas (and don’t consume much sugar of any kind).
To me, it tastes almost entirely like chocolate, of the kind you get in those Oreo candy canes. That is, the one that is so fake they just list it as “artificial flavors” in the ingredients.
It does seem to have some slight effect, as I had trouble falling asleep soon after drinking it, but nothing like something with real chocolate.
I really wish it had more of the vanilla flavor in it. And maybe even some cherry. But all I taste is that fake chocolate flavor.
