A Wild Thing no more: Reg Presley dies

Lead singer of The Troggs plays his last three chords. Wild Thing was probably the earliest example of the punk genre that was to come.

That’s a shame! While “Wild Thing” is the song most people are going to associate with the Troggs, I thought “Love is All Around” was one of the prettiest love songs ever. REM did a brilliant cover of that Presley tune.

RIP Reg!

Time to dig out the greatest hits cd that has the bonus 12 minutes of them arguing/swearing in the studio. Later parodied in"This is Spinal Tap"

And ***Love, Actually ***made nice use of it, too.

My parents used to take us on vacation to Indiana Beach…a typical beach resort with the boardwalk and ferris wheel and games, etc.

I can remember the summer “Wild Thing” was a huge hit, and the sound of that flute riff would echo out onto the beach - it is still a vivid memory of that summer of fun for me. Of course, they also played that song on something called a “juke box” about 200 times per day, so it was sort of burned into my memory. Still - whenever I hear that song I have to smile and am immediately taken back to a great moment in my youth.

But I wanna know for sure.

As happens, it’ll get more play time now. If not I’ll dig it up. Good, good memories there, all good.

I didn’t realize “Love is All Around” was a Troggs song. Indeed very sweet. A remembrance of my youth and grade school dances

But hey, who doesn’t like the hendrix “Wild thing”?

I’m going to have to dig up my copy of Lester Bangs’ Psychotic Reactions and Carburetor Dung and reread the great stuff he wrote about Presley and The Troggs.

My personal favorite is “Any Way That You Want Me.” It is a Baroque Pop classic. One of the great songs of the 60s.

Shame on you! That book should never be far from a reading chair.

RIP Reg

I’m ashamed to admit that is in a box. I really need to get it out, because I’ve been reminded of it twice this week. First by Exapno Mapcase’s mention of Astral Weeks in the greatest albums thread, and now by Reg’s death. It’s time to reread the whole book.
