Well, it’s now been nearly one year since my doctor ordered me on a permanent extreme low-fat diet. I’ve dropped forty pounds and gotten my medical condition under reasonable control, but I didn’t truly realize what a central role food plays in our lives.
Ths year I had no birthday cake. No ice cream either! No yummy grilled cheeseburgers for Fourth of July. No stuffing or pecan pie for Thanksgiving. There will be no Christmas cookies or eggnog for me this holiday or any future holiday.
I know it’s a minor rant - after all, I’m now reasonably healthy and can now admit my love affair with brussel sprouts, but I’ll still indulge in some mild self pity when everyone else loads up their plate on Christmas while I chow down on lean turkey and some cut up fruit.
Does anyone else miss some special dish? Can I get some commiseration here? Think of it folks - no more velvety chocolate, no more crunchy fried chicken or smooth, stick-to-your-mouth peanut butter. No more scrumptious sausage and cheese kolaches, no more gooey cheese enchiladas smothered in chili gravy.
C’mon and describe some wonderful holiday dish for me while I gnaw on my carrot sticks. Please?
First of all JayElle, congrats on the weight loss. As someone currently undergoing the fight, I wish you lots of success.
A good idea is not to commisserate on what you’ve lost (in terms of food selection) but to enjoy what you have. My wife has been phenominal at finding low-calorie, delicious alternatives for the foods I used to commonly eat. As such, I don’t feel deprived.
Fat FREE? As in completely fat free? I didn’t think that was healthy - you need SOME fat in your diet, don’t you? Or are you on some sort of prescribed diet for a medical condition?
Sure isn’t healthy: Can’t be 100% fat free though, in a year he would be dead. There are 2 essentual fatty acids that the body cannot produce, yet it needs to continue to survive. linoleic acid and linolenic acid. Without these, the body cannot make the necessary Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids it needs for survival.
So no, a 100% fat free diet is not possible. A person would die.
[sub]Well, maybe not die, but definately not be in good shape[/sub]
No, I’m not on a 100% fat free diet, but I can’t tolerate more than about 10 grams of fat a day. I have very severe IBS which is controlled through my diet and medication. Unfortunately, it looks like I have developed a heart arrythmia due to either an electrolyte imbalance from my diet or low blood pressure (still waiting for all the test results).
I’ve coped pretty well with the changes (Blown & Injected, thank god they didn’t take away my beer!), but there’s so many things I miss this time of year!
Thank you, Epimetheus - I’m sure everything will be just fine.
I didn’t intend to start a sympathy thread, though I appreciate the good thoughts. Mostly, I want to live vicariously through my fellow Dopers and hear all about your wonderful holiday treats.
What would holiday food would you miss if you could no longer eat it? I really miss my grandmother’s lebkuchen - yummy little fruitcake cookies with icing. You have to make them right after Thanksgiving so they can age for Christmas.
I just finshed off a cheescake (minus one slice given away) over the last week. It was rich, creamy, and a total delight to eat. Of course I will pay dearly for it in extra weight, but damn they’re good.
How about naming your favorite substitute for a formerly “ooey gooey bad for you” dish?
I’ll start:
Meatballs and sauce - I now eat Vegetinos and pasta sauce. Vegetinos are great - little vegetarian "meat"balls that actually taste good. I can eat five of them for only 2 weight-watcher’s points. Yum!
