East St. Louis, Ill., USA

Considered by many to be one of the worst places in the country.

And where tennis great Jimmy Connors hails from.

I’ve heard that East St. Louis is a bad place. On one of my frequent business trips to STL I drove across the bridge to there, to check it out. I chose a bright, sunny day to do it. It is certainly a depressed place, a struggling place. But it didn’t look to be all that bad. Two 'but’s, though:

  • but I wasn’t there late at night on a payday; it was a bright sunny Sunday morning, and
  • but I may not have gone to the worst areas of East St. Louis. I didn’t know where the bad parts of town were, I just followed my nose.
