Aaron Brown

What is he doing since he is no longer with CNN?

He’s a free agent at the moment. I think he’s mostly just kicking back, but he’s been making a bit of beer money on the lecture circuit.

I don’t like the direction that Klein is taking CNN in. “Flashy and exciting” doesn’t serve a news outlet well. (Remember, Jon: “When fighting monsters…”)

I’m conflicted because I like Anderson Cooper. He’s got style. AC360 is no NewsNight With Aaron Brown, though. I miss Brown’s thoughtfulness, and especially the way he took care to draw attention to the more detailed coverage of (competing) print media, no matter how much it put a hair up Klein’s ass.

Maybe I’m alone on this. I’m nostalgic for another era, and Brown’s delivery reminds me of that of a New York radio broadcaster of the 1940s. Closest thing to E.R. Murrow that we had on the air. I hope someone picks him up soon.

I just realized upon reading an article that Anderson Cooper had replaced him. Standing like a dummy in a hurricane isn’t news. It’s exciting, but it’s not news.
Asking the Senator about the body of one of her constituents being eaten by rats isn’t your basic interview skill, but it is certainly pertinent. Cooper seems a bit the ambulance chaser to me.

I like Aaron Brown, too, but I remember him from his Seattle days and just never happened to catch much of his later work. When he first went national, he was on ABC’s overnight World News Now; a show that would never be accused of taking itself too seriously. One night, Aaron gave all the hockey scores multiplied by pi.

More recently, that show also gave us the World News Polka.

Ladies and Gentlemen, presenting the World News Polka:

*Who cares what the network thinks? Or the sponsors, too?

[Barry’s Backup singers] Who cares?

And if your neighbors call the cops, here’s all you have to do:

[Barry’s Backup singers] What?

When they yell “It’s half past three!,”
tell them “Hey, it’s news to me!”
That’s the World News Polka!

They make us work the graveyard shift.
That’s why we go for broke.
So why not tune in ABC,
And join our little joke?

Five whole days, every week,
We’re here with our tongues in cheek.
That’s the World News Polka!*

It’s exciting?

In a sort of sick way, when I’m expecting a piece of galvanized roofing to blow by at 90 MPH and decapitate this guy, yeah.

I guess that counts.
