Abandoned city in last night's Mythbusters

Did anyone catch in last night’s *Mythbusters * ther name of the abandoned city they were driving around in?

I’m just curious about how a whole city or at least a subdivision, could be left vacant. I’m assuming and hoping that if the place was abandoned due to environmental contamination (eg: Love Canal) that they would not have been able to go there.

They said it was an abandoned military subdivision. I would assume it was built as part of a base, as housing for people assigned there.

Can’t remember the name, sorry.

I hereby dub it Adamville.

You mean Jamieburg.

You misspelled Kariland. (The queen will not be pleased).

Explodonia

Bustertown?

Bellecistan

PhilaGrantia.

Boomtown.

Mythmont.

Destruction Acres.

Plausible Place.
Busted Barrow.
Confirmed City.

Do you have any other information about which of the approximately 18 episodes a day Discovery shows it was? If they stayed in the Bay Area there are quite a few former and not yet redeveloped military bases around.

It was the new one promoted as exploding steaks.

It was the new one last night. With the stressed and relaxed drivers.

I’d be willing to bet that the abandoned naval base they are always using is Mare Island Naval Shipyard but I’m not 100% sure.

They do a lot of stuff at Naval Air Station Alameda (closed, and in my watching anyway the most common naval base they use) as well as some stuff at Mare Island (closed), and Hamilton Air Force Base (open), and Hunters Point Shipyard (closed).

At Ford Ord near Monterey, CA there are huge housing areas that have been completely abandoned. Just after a few months of no one being around, the place looked run-down.

Worst episode ever.

That town reminded me of the place that Brad Pitt and Co. end up in at the end of the movie Kalifornia.

According to a friend of mine, it looks like Ft Ord by Monterey. I was wondering about this myself.

Aside from the useless answers here (sorry), the area they were filming is now a part of the city of Marina, a community about 7 miles north of Monterey. That area was the housing for the Army’s 7th light infantry division (now located at Ft. Lewis in Washington). It was not abandoned due to environmental contamination. The Army essentially shipped the entire population of the base out in 1994 within a few weeks when the base was closed (I attended the closing ceremony). They left behind a lot of things they couldn’t ship or didn’t want like sofas, refrigerators, computers, stoves, washers and dryers and mattresses. Only a small annex which is a part of the Presidio of Monterey was left behind. Land has been given over to the various cities in the area, Marina and Seaside getting the largest amount.

As for why it wasn’t re-used by the communities in the area immediately is because it takes forever and a day for land to get transferred over from the military, and a lot of the buildings aren’t at all up to code. That housing was probably built about the 1960’s. Excepting the newest buildings (built about the late 1980’s), which were turned into lower income housing/discounted city/county employee housing, and housing for the students at the nearby college. Elsewhere, some of the buildings were built in the 1940’s during WWII and have lead paint. Those have mostly been torn down as well.

Because it has taken years for the military to give the housing over, the houses have deteriorated to the state you saw on the episode. Nature has taken over and you get a real feel for what it would be like if everyone suddenly died out. I’ve actually driven through that same area and there are a few interesting things to see as well as some rather creepy graffiti. There has been some cleanup. While a few things were still around, I noticed a lot of the trash, mattresses and abandoned junk had been cleared.

When the transfer was finally approved, the area was to be entirely razed and turned into a housing area targeted to older folks called “Cypress Knolls”. Unfortunately, the housing bubble popped just before they could get started and that’s why it hasn’t been cleared yet, as the developer stopped all work. Oh, and you can’t get into that area now. Once it was designated as a new housing development, the developers fenced the entire area off and put locked gates up. Perfect place for them to shoot without being bothered by gawkers.

Was it Detroit?
I say Detroit.
