Abdul Hamid: Can he be tried for Treason?

This is the American citizen who was recently taken into custody by US troops after fighting with (on the side of) the Taliban.

Since he was fighting American interests (if not specifically Americans) and working with a group who’ve stated their ultimate (if unrealistic) goal is the downfall of America, can he be tried for treason?
