I didn’t see any mention of Abigail Breslin’s Academy Award nomination as best supporting actress in the other threads.
Watched the film last night and it was very funny, and the ending was hilarious. But, Abigail’s performance was that good??? I can think of dozens of child actors who are far better (maybe because they had better parts), and can’t see any way this performance was worthy of a nomination. Am I wrong? Am I a monster?
Actually I though the performances of the actors playing her brother and grandfather were far better.
We watched Little Miss Sunshine two nights ago on pay-per-view.
It was quite good, some really funny scenes and certainly worth watching and paying $3.95 for the privilege.
But being nominated for Best Film? And also Best Supporting Actress?
Uh, no. It wasn’t THAT good.
I haven’t seen all that many films this year, but I certainly think Blood Diamond and Dreamgirls were certainly more Oscar-worthy nominations than Little Miss Sunshine.
Again - the film was quite good, but this is a case where film hype seems to be taking over reality. So my answer is no, I don’t think the little girl should have been nominated, even though she played the part well - I hardly think she is the best supporting actress on screen this year.
I thought the movie was ok for what it was, but nothing remarkable. The little girl was just average in the movie, in my opinion. The girl in Pan’s Labrynth was markedly better, was in a better movie and had by far the more challenging role. If they were going to nominate a kid, they should have nominated her.
Thank God for that, because such a category would inevitably devolve into Cutest Little Ham. Ugh.
I think Breslin’s fine in the movie and benefitted from the coattails of LMS as well as there not being all that many other female performances that stood out quite so prominently in people’s memories (they were out there, but it’d take a little more digging). Phyllis Somerville, Maggie Gyllenhaal, and Shareeka Epps all gave performances I would’ve preferred to see honored, but none of them were in films that made as much $$$ as LMS, and none of them had nearly as much screen time as Breslin either (which no doubt helped her case).
I didn’t think the movie was great overall, but would have liked it less with another actress in her spot. That being said, if they wanted a young ‘un, Shareeka Epps’ performance in Half Nelson blew Breslin’s out of the water (and Anna Paquin’s, and Tatum O’Neal’s).
