I know this is something of an aside, but why are you singling out white men? Proportionally, Hispanics are more anti-choice than whites.
I know that ‘white men’ is rapidly becoming a snarl term synonymous with all that’s regressive and mean spirited in public life, but don’t kid yourself that minorities can’t be conservative on social issues, too. In many cases, minorities are more conservative than eeeeeeeevil white men, and abortion is merely one example.
Oh, inside too. Because if you’re not a virgin, you’re a whore.
In the US more power (political, financial, etc.) is held by white men and they’re in the lead on this issue. If you make an argument that it was the societal power of Hispanic men that got abortion outlawed in El Salvador and passed laws that result in women going to jail for years due to miscarriages and stillbirths I’d probably nod in agreement - in El Salvador Hispanic men have the power, not so much white/Anglo men.
People will come out to vote if you give them a chance to feel righteous and noble and pure and special and important. And making sure those non-white women are properly punished for their slutty behavior—there are few more powerful motivators of right-wing votes.
[/QUOTE]
This is very true. Now you’ve got me thinking about a way to harness that power for the left wing. The last time they harnessed that power, was when voting left meant being young and free, not old and stuffy.
For the majority of people, the non-tribal reasons to vote left or right don’t matter much.
In her memoir After All, Mary Tyler Moore relates having a miscarriage into the toilet, and having to fish the fetus out of the toilet bowl so the doctors could examine it to “prove” it was a miscarriage and not an abortion.
A small but (I think) important nitpick - anti-choice, anti-women people never talk about “fetuses;” it’s always “babies” for these assholes (as in, “Abortion kills babies!”).
Jesus fucking Christ.
Maybe they should quit being so regressive and mean-spirited.
I’ve been harping on how anti-abortion men are, and wondering about the reasons for that, but now I’m thinking about anti-abortion women; what makes women anti-abortion? Is it all about “saving the bayyyy-beeees” for them? Are they jealous of women who haven’t been roped into strait-laced lives by being brainwashed about religion since birth, and they want these harlots to suffer? Is it the same deal as the men, they want to control people who are vulnerable to being controlled?
But my entire point is that, on the issue of abortion, Hispanics are more regressive than white men. So why single out white men? I get Broomstick’s point that most people in power, and therefore most anti-choice politicians, are white. But, proportionally speaking, the people most approving of anti-choice policies are Hispanic. Ultimately, that’s what counts.
People keep making that claim about White Men. I’m a white man, and I’ve never felt targeted or oppressed.
Getting back to the OP … How did abortion become the one overriding issue for conservatives? It’s about sex!
Think about the timing of Roe v Wade. Conservatives were still reeling from the 60s, and a big part of the 60s was the new freedom (new to the mainstream, anyway) for women to have sex outside marriage, even indiscriminately, just for fun. Now here comes the SCOTUS giving all those slutty, free-loving women the right to nullify one of the direst consequences of their behavior. Bad enough we let them have birth control, now they can legally terminate a pregnancy?
in other words – it ain’t about the fetus, it’s about what created the fetus.
Sex is part of it, yes, but only to the extent that it’s a part of Women’s Lib. Letting them have those liberal thoughts about equal rights and such, instead of the subservient role God decreed, has led to social anarchy, in the subconscious of many of those who make it The Only Issue That Matters (Other Than Guns). The fight against abortion is an attempt to restore the world to the good old days when women knew and accepted their place, and Make America Great Again.
Oh, right, guns too - that’s part of restoring the world to the good old days when the colored people knew and accepted *their *place, and we had Law And Order to make sure of it. MAGA.
I hate to quote myself, but here you go: “then why are they so often not just failing to act, but opposing action on the part of others?”
You see, I’m fully aware that our ability to act isn’t unlimited, nor am I calling out people for failing to use their last available penny to save the lives of others. But when someone gets in the way of other people acting to save lives on account of what they believe, while claiming to be pro-life, that’s a different story, isn’t it?
I’m 64 years old. Please remind me of when, in my lifetime, the U.S.A. has gone to war against a country of white people.
The argument that “If you ban abortions, then there will be more deaths of women from back-alley abortions” does not work with many pro-lifers because the math of banning abortion still leads to a decrease in innocent lives lost, by the argument put forth.
If a fetus is a life as much as a born person, and if you ban abortion in a nation where 1 million babies are aborted annually, safely and legally, and there are 87,000 women dying from illegal abortions as result, that leads to a net gain of 913,000 lives saved, or so goes the logic.
Now, one can say that that argument is repulsive, but from a sheer mathematical standpoint, its logic is absolutely sound and consistent.
The Serbs are white. The USA went to war against Serbs in the Bosnia and Kosovo campaigns in 1995-1999.
And if the Cold War had turned hot, you’d have seen American forces warring against white Caucasian Warsaw Pact forces.
Also, is it America’s fault that the Taliban, al-Qaeda, Vietcong, ISIS, Saddam’s occupiers of Kuwait, etc. were brown-skinned? You can’t control the race of your enemies.
I have. I guess my experience cancels out yours. Life goes on.
Serbia. Though Velocity also makes a good point about how, if the Cold War had turned hot, that would have been a war against white people, too.
Is it? I would think “what counts,” really, is who has the power to change things. Are pro-lifers in it for the Latin vote?
So what does this White Man’s Woe and war stuff have to do with the subject?
Something about how pro-lifers only care about white lives, or to that effect.
