About mp3s

I just recently bought a CD that I’d like to discuss in CS. I’d like to rip one of the tracks from it, upload it to my server and post a link that will allow folks to download it so they can share their opinions with me.

Is this allowed? I read the FAQ sticky, and saw things about quotes and P2P software, but didn’t see this situation addressed.

Thanks.

Placing a complete track online would be a breach of copyright.

What track is it? And try an Altavista audio search to see if it’s available elsewhere.

Thanks – I though that would be the case.

The track is “Total Eclipse of the Heart” done by the University of Southern California’s SoCal Vocals. It’s from the Boca 2001: Best of College a Cappella album. I wanted to start a thread about a Cappella music, specifically the kind that uses the voicebox to make all of the instrumental effects.

I’ll try AltaVista. Thanks again.

It is not the track you want, but a search for “Capella” on Google China’s MP3 search (which is mp3.baidu.com) does provide a song.

This song is available on emusic.com.

They have a 50-song free trial. Registration does require a credit card, but there’s one place you could get it legally free.

Copyright applies here, regardless of the format, and we’d rather not be an accessory to abuse of copyright, even with the best of intentions, which you have, so I’m not yelling at you.

You can link to a snippet, a sample of the work, that would be all right, sampling or quoting for criticism is a “Fair Use.” But you can’t make it available for other people to download the entire work for free, that’s violation of copyright.

Thanks for asking, we appreciate it; kudos to you for your consideration. It’s always better to ask for permission than to beg for forgiveness here.
