About the ATI All-In-Wonder 8500...

I just noticed on ATI’s website that a 128 MB version of the All-In-Wonder 8500 is being offered in Compaq computers. Does anyone know when the retail version will be available?

There’s nothing on ATI’s website to suggest that their isn’t a retail version of the 128 MB Radeon 8500. They do advertise the Compaq you mention, though. I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but it seems that you can buy straight from their website, too.

I appreciate the effort, but I’m referring to the All-In-Wonder Radeon 8500, the one with the built-in TV tuner and Tivo-like video capture capability.

Oh this one…ATi All-In-Wonder Radeon 8500 DV Review
Just so you’re aware this card DV 8500 All in Wonder is slower than the non-AIW straight 8500.

The ATi AIW uses the same Radeon core technology present in the Radeon 8500, but the 8500DV runs slower than the regular 8500, a card which is geared more towards gamers. The 8500 runs with a core speed of 275 MHz and a memory clock speed of 550 MHz where the 8500DV runs on a 230MHz core and a 380 MHz memory clock. The differences are quite large and it boggles me as to why ATi would do this. The price of the AIW is substantially higher than the 8500 thus moving it out of the same market as the 8500.

What’s to keep anyone from just overclocking the AIW to normal 8500 speeds. I’d say a decent percentage of hardcore gamer types would be willing to take that risk. Maybe there’s an underlying issue involving heat and the added components.
