So lets imagine for a second. John Wilkes Booth enters the president’s booth intent on assassination. However his pistol fails to fire and Lincoln nocks it out of his hand. The two square off and Lincoln calls off his guard and tells them to leave Booth to him. The two get down to the stage and begin to fight hand to hand.
Booth wins. At this point, Lincoln was old and quite possibly ill. The war and its worries had sapped his strength, and his family tragedies had also taken a toll.
56 is not that old for a former talented wrestler with a fair amount of height (and plausibly weight) advantage to take over a pansy actor whose only skills are stage fighting.
Lincoln was older and possibly ill but -------- us old farts have some experience and nothing much to lose. I know personally that I’ve taken guys much younger and healthier/stronger. I say its a toss-up with a slight edge to Abe.
I give it to Abe. He fought tougher men in his youth. Booth was agile to be sure, but his fighting experience was much more limited. Lincoln had superior reach and even at his age would have Booth crying for his mommy.
Even normal Lincoln I give the edge to based on his demonstrated experience and reach. Booth’s fitness, thanks to youth and avoiding the stress of being President during a civil war, at best keeps him competitive. Booth might score an upset but the odds are on Lincoln.
Okay, so how about Lincoln vs Andrew Jackson? You know, the president who went after an attempted assassin with his walking stick and had to be pulled off the guy. The president who rattled when he walked because of all the dueling bullets in him?
It would be like Batman and the Joker. You’d think that in unarmed combat, the expert in hand-to-hand combat would win easily- but Jackson is just too insane to go down.
