AC Adapter through washing machine

So I have just arrived back home from a trip and threw all the laundry in the washing machine… including the AC adpater for my Sony mobile phone. :smack:

So - it looks like it is very sealed and it is likely that little water got inside. Our washing machine is European so it only uses about 3 drops of water and takes a week to do a load (ok - perhaps a bit more water and slightly faster).

I am thinking to just let it dry out for a few days and try it… bad idea? I don’t have an outlet controlled by a switch so I will have to plug it in to a live socket and don’t want to zap myself.

Wrap it up tightly in a dry towel and put it through the spin cycle a couple of times. If you have access to 100% isopropyl alcohol (90% rubbing alcohol is acceptable, but nothing lower), you can dunk it in that before doing the homebrew centrifuge trick. Alcohol displaces water, and dries faster. Plus it’ll help clean out any detergent residue.

Ditto Q.E.D. on the alcohol. Or, you might leave it in the alcohol for a long time, a couple days maybe. I’m thinking it might take longer to get enough alcohol into the assembly to be helpful. You might also try pressurizing and evacuating the alcohol container while the thing soaks, to improve the transfer of alcohol into it. Or you might try thermal cycling. I suspect the most important phase in the washing might have been if it got hot during a wash cycle and then submerged in cooler water during the start of a rinse, such that some air inside the device contracted due to the lowering of temperature, and pulled a slight vacuum on the inside which drew some mass of water into the assembly.
