De gustibus. I’m not a big AC/DC listener, but he’s just got a powerful groove to his drums. I’ve heard plenty of AC/DC covers and nobody quite gets the Phil Rudd feel just right.
I’m with puly. You’re wrong. Rudd can pop his groove like nobody else.
One of the stories I read about this mentioned meth. Damn. If that’s true, I hope he can get help. And, as has been mentioned, no one actually got murdered. Whatever happened to the good old days, when people got hooked on crack, and sold all of their personal belongings?
That’s because they were bored.
So, they’re back in black.
Great news.
I should probably point out that being a publicly-owned broadcaster doesn’t make it RNZ the “official government radio” in say the North Korean sense; the state doesn’t have editorial control, let alone the government of the day. It’s more just to ensure that non-commercial content gets a go.
Well I’d hope he could get his groove right, since he gets to play the same groove over and over on all of their songs. They could probably just program a drum machine to lay down the beat in a lot less time than it takes them to assemble his high hat.
What say you to my claim that he has played the same thing for 600 songs?
Well, there is the nice 12/8 groove on “Ride On.”
Yes, his parts are generally 1-3 kick, 2-4 snare, with the occasional fill, hi-hat bark, crash, toms, thrown in to an eighth note hi-hat beat. But he makes that beat swing like few rock drummers can. Deep pocket playing, powerful, cool, behind-the-beat feel like Watts, and absolutely perfect for AC/DC’s minimalistic 3-chord rock. Love his hi hat groove. Listen to his rock shuffle on “School Days,” for example. Tasty stuff.
I would say you are wrong. Listen to Sin City’s tom tom beat vs. low-key stuff like Gone Shootin’ vs. big stuff like Back in Black.
No worries - not trying to convince you otherwise. One man’s simple, great groove is another man’s Boring. It happens.
Back to the topic of the OP - this all seems a bit weird. A big legal announcement that gets retracted with in days, but Rudd is not part of the conversation related to the new CD release and replacing Malcolm anyway. And some charges are still in place against him. Lots of stuff going on that we aren’t privy to.
There’s a clip of Angus Young being interviewed years ago and they ask him what he thinks of the criticism that AC/DC has made “the same album twelve times”.
He thinks for a minute, grins and says “They’re wrong. We’ve made the same album thirteen times”.
I don’t think anyone is saying Phil Rudd is Buddy Rich. He plays rock drums for the world’s biggest bar band and he does it well. I’m not a musician but it seems to me that a major criteria for playing drums is can you keep a beat well. He doesn’t need to be a percussion virtuoso.
I think that the source of these stories were leaks, I remember one story mentioning that this wasn’t part of an official announcement.
In regard to his drumming: I’ve known drummers that say he sticks to simple beats, but I’ve never known one to say he’s bad at it. One drummer recommended I play along with AC/DC and ZZ Top records to learn how to play, because they played simple beats and did it well.
But this was a very poetic twist to life until the whole “not enough evidence” problem came about. He’s still got trouble ahead, but not quite as heavy now.
Attempting to procure murder charges dropped, but the drug charges are still in play:
Right, but CarnalK already mentioned that a few days ago in post #45. And he’s still accused of making death threats besides the drug charges.
He was a rocker, a roller, a real out-of-controller…
The question still remains though, did he keep a stiff upper lip?
It takes some big balls to procure discount dirty deeds, alas, he was kicked in the teeth by some riff raff squealer.
I wonder if this could be traced back to his youth, was he a problem child? Perhaps he would have saved himself some rock’n’roll damnation if he would have gone shootin’ himself.
No matter now, as money talks, and he is back in black on the highway to hell…
(I’ll just stop there… I could go on for ages…)

Upon further review, my ad/dc meme response has already been used.
I’ll bet he’s feeling a whole lot rosier now.
