Academy Awards 2024 - 96th ceremony - Watch Along Thread

I think Pacino missed a cue and wasn’t “all there.” I recall in recent years the show has shown short vids throughout the night of the BP noms and still announced them again (in a short vid or series of stills) just prior to announcing the winner. I would bet anything it was a screw-up.

Doctor Who needs an episode where the Doctor ends up singing and dancing “I’m Just Ken” at the Oscars since they have footage of the new Doctor doing it already.

You are actually correct, though I thought you were wrong until I looked. Here is a year ago where a coherent Harrison Ford did the honor.

They always announce them one more time. This reminds me of the time Elizabeth Taylor had to be gently guided to name the nominees first.

It did appear that Pacino had a separate piece of paper to maybe read off of. He did not have glasses. That might have been the issue.

“Hoo-ah!” ?

mmm

My favorite was years ago when Kirk Douglas cut off his son(I think) and said, “Ah…the winner is…” before announcing it. It was fun.

Is there nice list of Best Picture presenters who handed out the big award?

Best joke of the night was Kimmel telling them to destroy Emma Stone’s envelope before they announce Best Picture.

Here’s I’m Just Ken if you missed it, or like me just want to see it again.

I’ve been thinking about why Al Pacino announced the winner the way he did. Perhaps after Jimmy Kimmel’s joke about the Best Actress envelope, he was thinking that perhaps he was handed the wrong envelope, as in the previous year Emma Stone won, when Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway were given the wrong envelope in 2018.

I think he was just unprepared, slightly drunk, or something. It was just quick moment. Not too much to read into to it other than “weird a bit”.

Pacino was supposed to have backup. Michelle Pfeiffer was supposed to present with him.

I am an unapologetic Oscars fangirl. I look forward to this event to the extent that I block out the entire day so I can watch all the preshow / red carpet previews. It was pretty feckin’ disappointing to realize I have no access to ABC. I ended up having to sign up for a free trial to some rando service (Fubu?) in order to view it. It did not disappoint me in any way

It could be as simple as concentrating on the microphones on the stage.

It was hard to read some of the names - usually, they show the graphic in full on the TV screen, but this time they wanted to keep the singer and dancers in the shot the whole time. There was a screen full of names at the end that was pretty much impossible to read, although I doubt they would have relegated Welch or Young to that.

A few other notes:

I thought that the Academy usually tried to stay away from saying “Best {category name}” for its category names, except for Best Picture, but if that’s true, then whoever wrote the teleprompter text didn’t get the memo. There was also one presenter who said the forbidden words, “And the Winner Is.”

Was I the only one who saw Pacino’s reading of the Best Picture winner and had a flashback to 1985 and Amadeus? (Back then, they did name all of the nominees just before opening the envelope, but Sir Laurence Olivier didn’t - I think it was because of his eyesight - and since Amadeus was the first name that would have been read, people were confused.)

Not being a Truth Social reader, how accurate was that Trump post that Kimmel read?

Burt Young was literally the only name I could pick out, it was all the way at the bottom, and I even remarked to my wife how weird it was that he got no picture moment.

I think they’ve done that before, but even then, the microphones usually pick up some applause. But this time I heard absolutely none.

why is that phrasing forbidden?

I’m wondering if Carl Weathers bumped Burt Young off the picture montage.

And Raquel Welch died in February 2023, so presumably she was in last year’s Memoriam.
