Accidentally shooting someone. Legal consequences.

If I accidentally shot a fellow hunter while aiming for quail, whould there normally be any legal follow up? What sort of charges might be brought, or is the sort of thing where the police just shrug it off?

Depending on the jurisdiction, there might be a charge for something like “reckless use of a firearm.” On the other hand, accidents happen, and if the law decided it was just a hunting accident, they’d be unlikely to do anything.

According to this site there were 672 two-party hunting accidents in North America in 1996. So it’s not THAT rare.

IANAL, but since the other guy was a member of the hunting party, I’d say that there would be a strong argument for “assumed risk.”

I assume this in reference to Dick Cheney’s accident?
