Really, I plead with members here who currently or have served in the military if it seems plausible that they would allow the person in the foxhoel next to you because he was openly gay. Or that their fellow soldiers would. I never served but I cannot fathom it.
This guy is supposed to be pro-military but he thinks that our servicemen are bigots who would let their fellow soldiers die because they are gay. How can someone be pro-military if they think the men and women in the armed forces would be as craven and bigoted as he obviously is and allow a fellow American soldier to die because of who they are attracted to?
I thought about putting this in Great Debates but I am hopeful that Dopers as disgusted as I am can come up with some great flames against this twit.
James Inhofe is a scumbag of the lowest species anyway. He’s militantly anti-evolution, and supports holding American citizens without trial or redress in case of suspicion of terrorism.
I am disgusted, but I don’t have the vitriol to come up with a particularly good rant. However, the main problem (besides the homophobia) with his view is that he assumes DADT actually WORKS and that neither he nor others he know haven’t ALREADY served with gays. I can almost guarantee he has, he just didn’t know it.
It’s not like the moment that gays are officially allowed in the US Military they’re going to start clamoring for pink camo or something - they’re still going to look just like any other soldier, the same way they do now.
Ex-military here. Inhofe is flat out wrong. At least in the Air Force, we did not have white airmen, black airmen, male airmen, female airmen, or any other damn thing besides blue airmen. As in Air Force Blue.
In basic, everybody is equally miserable–just trying to survive the T.I.s (Training Instructors, similar to Drill Instructors in other branches.). It was a bonding experience, with amazing diversity–kids from all over the country–yankees, Rebs, cowboys, hippies…even Pittsburgh Steeler fans (shout out to my man Charlie Daniels). Basic taught us to meld together into effective airmen, regardless of personal quirks. If we go to war, we go to war together. I care that the man or woman next to me can do their damn job. I do not care who or what they plan to fuck when off duty.
Now there’s a case for DADT if i’ve ever heard one. If i had a Steelers fans in the next foxhole over, i might even consider lobbing one of my grenades in, just to be sure.
The issue isn’t about natural attractions the way Jesus intended! The issue is that gays are amoral sub-humans and as such, soldiers won’t fight for them.
At least that’s how I think this piece of Santorum thinks…
Again, we’re hearing the exact same crap that was trotted out to argue against integrating black troops into the military. What self-respecting white man would fight with, or for, a black man? I’m embarrassed to admit I’m from Oklahoma.
Seriosuly, this is like the most insulting thing you can say about a soldier, it seems, tha they cannnot put aside their personal prejudices for the good of their fellow soldiers, the military and the nation.
I thought we had the most professional military in the world?
We do, possibly tied with a few others. Sadly, our legislators lag behind those of most other democracies.
You know what I think is part of the problem? State legislatures. Lots of people cut their teeth in state legislatures before running for national office - and all too often, state legislatures are jokes. Legislators are paid a pittance, or not at all, and basically get elected on nothing more than name-recognition. Legislators learn bad habits in their states, and take them to Congress.
Inhofe also says that Birthers have a point about Obama’s citizenship, even though in 2004 he sponsoreda bill that would make even 17 year old foreign kids adopted by American citizens “natural born citizens”. He can’t even be consistent in his douchery.
That is, when he served in the Army, in the late fifties, I believe the culture was exactly as he describes, and I believe that attempting to permit openly gay soldiers to serve would have been disastrous.
But he’s fifty years out of date. Today. most young men don’t really care. Sure, they may call each other ‘fag’ in a way that’s not exactly A+ graduate material in sensitivity workshops, but at the core, they don’t really care about the issue in a big way.
So Inhofe is wrong about today’s military, even as he’s right about the Army he served in.
