Accusing someone of Threadshitting

Perhaps there should be. It’s one thing for a Mod wannabe to jump in with threadshitting accusations. It’s quite another to start a thread and play by the rules only to have it shit on/in.

Is there a good reason why OP’s don’t get special leeway to semi-mod his own thread? I suppose you could argue that its too much for the real Mod to distinguish between one poster and the others…but I don’t think so.

The OP should try not to order posters to do one thing or another: that can create problems for the mods if a member does not grasp the essence of this board.* But OPs should be able to point out hijacks and even cajole if they think the thread is vearing off course. Personally I think hijacks are usually fine as long as they are identified as such: tangents don’t always derail, though they run that risk.

I’d avoid writing that another post both offends and shouldn’t be expressed. That’s a job for mods. You can attack another’s post. I think you should be able to politely guide the thread so that the relevant issues get addressed. If a member thinks he or she needs to guide with rancor though, it’s probably be time to back off.
I’ll go further and say that it is even the responsibility of the OP to monitor their own threads. That’s not an official or even unofficial rule: I’m merely suggesting it is considerate.
ETA:

  • (…and if the poster does grasp the essence of this board, it still creates problems for the mods because it sets a poor example.)

So there are in fact dif rules for the OP and other posters … or are you just agreeing that there should be?

There are not different rules for the OP and other posters (except for the rules pertaining to starting a thread- descriptive title etc).

I agree. I think that the OP should be able to point out hijacks and ask that they be taken elsewhere, without “junior modding” violations. But note that word “ask”. I also think that a really nicely worded request from a poster isnt always wrong.

I think the Mods were right here, as only a Note was issued. A Warning would have been out of line, as that was a issue that could have completely destroyed the thread.

I kept that ambiguous because I am a poster, not a mod.

  1. I agree that there should be.
2a. IMHO and in practice I have never seen polite OP guidance get modded. I have provided polite OP guidance in the past. OTOH, polite guidance in general isn’t modded either. So technically the same rules apply to both groups.
2b. But if a member other than the OP provides certain kinds of thread guidance, it could be a WTF situation. Right? Admittedly, I’ve never seen this happen.

  2. OTOH, there are a large minority of posters who don’t grasp that what they mean isn’t necessarily what they write. The “Politeness” concept escapes some of them. So, you can see where the official line comes from.

  3. OTOH2, while the OP can make polite suggestions, he doesn’t get to order and whining is unbecoming. If the OP feels overly emotional about certain responses and seeks to squash them, they should probably calm themselves.
More generally, there are greater and lesser infractions. Greater ones include direct insults outside of the pit and failing to obey mod instructions. Lesser ones typically get notes. I’m setting aside instaban stuff.
