Acer monitor problem

My Acer AL2416W monitor, which I just got five weeks ago, has developed fine vertical lines, actually thin darker and brighter bands, about a millimeter apart under 1920 x 1200 (coarser under lower resolutions). The OSD has very thin vertical slices missing, through which I can see the Windows desktop. Occasionally, parts of the screen shimmer.

I could live with this except t really make JPGs look like crap. This first started happening a week ago. I turned the brightness down to 60% (had been keeping it at maximum) and the lines went away for a while. But now they’re back. They disappear for a few minutes and then reappear.

I tried changing the refresh rate – but the only options are Adapter Default, Optimal and 60 Hz. All of them have the lines.

I looked on Acer’s website for new drivers, and the only one that’s there is for Windows XP. I have Win 98. Will the driver work on my system?

What could be wrong? Did I just buy a lemon?

It’s possible the problem is with your graphics card. I had the same problem twice with a Gateway machine and both times it was a blown graphics card. It couldn’t handle the CAD software I was running.

Thanks for the help, folks!

Well, I downloaded the new driver and changed my color scheme to white on black, and things seem okay. I’ve got my fingers crossed, but just in case, I’ll start looking at new video cards. (This problem can’t occur with digital video output, right??)
