Achacha: has anyone tried this fruit?

I’ve just been doing the Saturday morning shopping run and this weekend’s special at the greengrocer’s was achachas. There was a whole screed about “wonderful new fruit…native to Bolivia…now grown in the pristine rainforest of Queensland” etc.

Has anyone eaten it?

Yep, they were flogging them in the local grocers before Xmas.

Nice enough, perhaps just a bit too fiddly per cubic mouthful to really take off. Taste is nice mix of sweetness and citrus tang, with a little bit of fizziness. Like a lemon sorbet version of kiwifruit.

Kids seemed to enjoy the peeling part [you need a fingernail or something to split the case, which then peels off easily and cleanly.

Final verdict - kids school lunches or something interesting / weird when you’ve got guests over, but not enough actual ‘meat’ to stand on their own.

Thanks. They’ve obviously hit town everywhere at much the same time.

I’ll give them a try next time I’m shopping. They were fairly pricey and I didn’t want to buy some, take one bite, hate it and then throw them away.

I hear Jimmy Durante was a fan.

The door’s over there.

Got a photo? I live in the tropics, but don’t recognize the name.

Darn you!

Wikipedia. It’s apparently a mangosteen relative.
