Acid-free pineapple?

A friend said that years ago when he was in Maui he used to buy acid-free pineapple.

Anyone know anything about this?
Where could i buy some for myself is my next question

Well, I didn’t have much luck searching on the net for “acid-free pineapple”, but I did stumble across a paragraph about “low-acid pineapple” cultivation in a 1999 annual report by the RETA-H (Rural Economic Transition Assistance-Hawai`i) program here (warning, PDF format): http://www.hawaii-sbdc.org/reports/rdc1999/r-9.pdf

It sounds like these varieties may not ship well. Perhaps that’s why they’re not readily available on the Mainland?

I think what your friend was talking about is Maui Gold pineapple. Delicious, sweet and less acidic than most pineapple I’ve had around here.

Just Google on maui gold pineapple and you’ll find some info.

Apparently there was a lawsuit a couple of years ago against Del Monte, which you can read about here.

I normally get raging indigestion from pineapple, but the stuff I had on Maui was excellent and easy to eat. I had my parents ship back a couple of them when they went there last year. There are plenty of places that’ll ship them anywhere, and you can get it done at the airport too.
