Acid reflux? Ulcers? Karma?

On Saturday I had to wake up at 5:00 am to attend a math conference. As I sauntered into the kitchen to whip up some oatmeal, I noticed that one of my suitemates had left out a big bottle of Sprite. I don’t drink soda very often, particularly at breakfast time, but I do feel the compulsive need to consume tasty-looking food items that others have foolishly left in plain sight.

I took a swig of the Sprite. As soon as I swallowed it, I felt a horrible pain in my stomach like I had just been stabbed. I had to hold onto the kitchen counter to prevent myself from falling over. The pain subsided after about 15 seconds, at which point I happily devoured oatmeal with no problems.

I’ve never experienced an adverse reaction to soda, nor have I ever had any problems consuming stuff early in the morning. Any ideas what might have caused this?

I’m not a doctor, but my guess is that the soda just went down weird and cause some pain in the esophagus. It happens sometimes if you take a swig too quickly. I used to get this sometimes too.

Roofies?

Shooting from the hip, it sounds suspiciously like esophageal spasm (mostly likely from physical/chemical irritation) to me. (and IAAMD)

If it’s recurring frequently, see a doc.
