And that’s the answer. Acronyms in computer science long predate the web. Back in the good old days, before you newbies got on, and when you had to know something about the structure of the net to even send mail, newsgroups were dominated by those in the business, who used acronyms like we did in everyday life. As new people drifted in they used them also to fit in.
What didn’t come over, since you need too much actual computer science and engineering knowledge to do it, are technical terms applied to real life. When I was in grad school we interposed a comment in a conversation by posting an interrupt. When a boring talk made you sleepy it put you in a high Z state. Etc.
Its a 14 k of g in a pfd sorta thing. Either you get it or you dont.
I only use the commonly accepted ones – CIA, FBI, PhD, that sort of thing.
IDK, BFF, OMG…personally, and now I’m in OF (Old Fart) mode, I find that to be pretty childish.
Back in the stone age when I was forced to take how to write good classes, I am pretty sure it was considered SOP and taught as such to spell out any acronym the first time it was used in a piece of writing.
I know, I wish they’d adopt it as the protocol universally, but mostly for the board.
Levdrakon; okay, I give up, what the devil does WRT stand for.
(I swear half my posts are asking what acronyms mean!)
No one seems to understand that the more acronyms out there, the LESS likely it is that everyone knows what they mean.
What does LESS stand for again?
WRT = with regard(s) to
HTH…
With regard to…
Let everyone speculate, Sunspace.
I was most displeased, and utterly baffled, when FTW changed meanings entirely to its opposite.
There’s a special place in hell for you for bringing that up, you SOB.
I’d kind of like to see one of those youtube subtitled Hitler rants where he tries to figure out what that means.
O ffs…
I like the phrase itself enough <still kinda new to me, still makes me laugh with childish glee> but can’t say it at work, around umm…anyone ,really, so I’ve learned to just make a new word out of the acronym and it comes out a mumbled ‘ooohfffffffffffffffssss’.
Or, ‘Oh for Pete’s sake’, which makes coworkers think I’m so quaint and old-fashioned, when in my head I’m cursing the place down.
MEH.
(Mind Enhancement Help)
Well … Color me baffled (CMB) too.
What do you think it used to mean and what do you think it means now?
If GuanoLad means what I think he means, it used to mean “Fuck The World” and now means “For The Win” - which strikes me as particularly funny since I knew a kid back in high school who had a tattoo of FTW on his forearm (with the originally-intended meaning) who must now be walking around with an annoyingly cutesy internet-speak initialism.
I my acronyms.
Am I SOL or FUBARED? Or is this just another SNAFU?
