Acronyms in common use with multiple meanings

I think this recently came up on the boards, but QFT stands for “quoted for truth” but I see it as “quite fucking true” (as do others). Both ways seem to work.

Whenever I hear of a PA working on a TV show or in a theater, I assume they mean “Public Address system,” not “Production Assistant.”

In other situations, my mind will first go to Pennsylvania.

In French, the New Democratic Party is the NPD, for Nouveau Parti démocratique.

Awkwardly, in Germany, the NPD is the extreme right-wing Nationaldemokratische Partei Deutschlands.

This led to some amusing moments at Montreal Pride in 2006, when we hosted the Outgames. We noticed that the German visitors were always pointing and laughing and taking photos of our booth. Eventually we realized it was because it said “NPD” in big rainbow letters.

I found the fact that AI can stand for American Idol or Artificial Intelligence rather amusing.

In veterinary circles, it stands for Artificial Insemination.

Or Amnesty International.

AP can also stand for Advanced Placement.

As there was when “Pirates of the Caribbean” (released in 2003) and “Passion of the Christ” (released in 2004) were the subject of discussions, and both tended to be referred to as “PotC”

When my late wife and I were visiting Victoria, BC, we found a business prominently advertised as CRS. We found it stood for Canadian Restaurant Supply, but we had always used the letters to describe that terrible debilatizing condition of advancing years:

CRS…can’t remember shit.

Round these parts, GWB meant George Washington Bridge long before GWB meant George Walker Bush.

Thought of another one I’ve seen:

HVAC can be (depending on context) either Heating, Ventilating, and Air Conditioning; or High Voltage Alternating Current.

Or pounds, shillings and pence (Libra, Solidus, Denarius).

These two-letter things may open a new can of worms, but still, in the SEC (Southeastern Conference, not Securities and Exchange Commission) there are:

UA = University of Alabama and University of Arkansas (yes, Arizona, too)
UK = University of Kentucky (United Kingdom?)
USC = South Carolina and Southern California
UT = Tennessee and Texas

Without context, these are almost useless.

There must be thousands of others. TLA’s are abundant enough.

Just had another idea: UA = Useless Abbreviation (or Acronym).
