Acting people (M&F) who were ruined for you the first time you saw them

Tonight my old ladies, and younger ones, watched “Doubt.” After it my daughter asked me, “Where do I know the priest from?”

“He was Dusty in ‘Twister.’ Who knew Philip Seymour Hoffman could act? He was the worst of the collection of bad actors in ‘Twister.’”

I wasn’t fooled when he was acclaimed for his portrayal of Truman Capote because in the bits I saw he had managed to portray Capote even further over the top than he was in real life. This was a guy who really, truly couldn’t act.

But here he did a pretty good job. Who knew? Um, except a lot of people who aren’t me.

Oh, and kudos to my wife, who recognized the sisters’ bonnets as being just like the one worn by Mother, er, SAINT Elizabeth Seton, though she grew up Methodist.

“You nailed it. The Sisters of Charity of New York were founded by Mother Seton. Your (Catholic) grandfather (who used to take her to Mass and then to a Polish bar where she would sing Shirley Temple songs for watered down Dr Pepper and pickled eggs when her anti-papist parents weren’t looking) would be proud.”

“Yeah, he would.”

For me it was Jeff Goldblum in “The Big Chill.” He is forever a disgusting human being for me!
