Action against SDMB idiocy

I think I’m going to begin not answering questions posted with misspellings in the topic heading. I’m not such a nazi about spelling within a document. Here speed is a reasonable excuse, I don’t spell check, and if it is legible and the point is made I’m happy. But on a website whose motto in “Fighting Ignorance since 1973”, it makes it tough to start a rational intelligent debate with someone who won’t take the time to spell the topic line (which one would expect everyone to read). I can’t rationalize that any of these people have any interest in becoming more wise and informed, and therefore don’t warrant my effort to reply.

End of Rant.

Gee, I sure hope you don’t do that.
I understand your point of view, and certainly feel it’s valid, but, gee, I kind of enjoy what you generally have to say.

I admit I have never quite been able to understand the whole spelling Nazi thing. I also admit that while I do proofread some things just slip by, oops.

What astounds me is not when someone makes fun of the bad spelling (enjoyable usually), or when they tack the note onto something else they are contributing anyway. What amazes me is when in the middle of a discussion someone posts only to point out an small spelling error. No joke, no other comment.

Do you do this in conversation if someone mispeaks? Do your friends abide this behavior graciously?

I’m not deeply offended by it, or anything, but I admit it puzzles me. What does it do for you? What can you possibly be getting from it?

It’s a human behavior outside my realm of understanding. I understand the desire to correct every tiny error, but still don’t get this.

You must know about this idiosycracy from the inside. Let me see.

So Omni, you’re saying that we can avoid your commentary in our threads and all we have to do is misspell a single word in our subject lines? Woo Hooo!!!

“Don’t bother to pack your bags, Or your map.
We won’t need them where we’re goin’,
We’re goin’ where the wind is blowin’.”

Heh! Wouldn’t it be hilarious if the topic title in this thread had a spelling error? I bet everyone of you checked just so that you could call Omni on it.

I’m not falling for that “mispeaks” bait!!! Oh wait, I just did.
Well, I think it’s important to make a distinction between certain spelling errors. I don’t think corrections are necessary when it’s the kind where someone’s fingers just hit the wrong keys. I DO think that in some cases where someone is blatantly slaughtering the spelling of a word unwittingly, they should be politely informed of the correct way to spell it. After all, this board’s mission is to fight ignorance. Letting someone continue on with their ignorance uncorrected would be a dereliction of our duties as dopers.

That being said, I hardly, if ever, correct anyone’s spelling. That would invite attacks on my poor grammar and sentence structure!
