Action movie one-liners

A wonderfully fun article at Slate: Yippee-Ki-Yay: The greatest one-liner in movie history.

The author, Eric Lichtenfeld, is a friend of mine, and he’s trying to score “hits” on the IMDB. If you’re registered there, and if you like the article, and if you’d like to post a comment:

My favorite action picture line is not included in the article. It’s John Wayne: “Never apologize, it’s a sign of weakness.”

Fun article.

I’ve heard it said here that the movie “Aliens” is just one long, beautiful bunch of one-liners strung together.

I liked Willis’ variation on the theme on The Daily Show last night.

“Yabba-dabba-do, motherfucker.”

I liked the article too, but come on, how can you not include Casablanca? Best one-liners ever!

My all time favorite is “Who are those guys?” from Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. It gets a giggle every time and reinforces the essential connectedness of the characters–it’s kind of a two person one liner, if you will.

My friend and I were watching the preview for Live Free or Die Harder and they show him uttering the immortal line…the crowd cheers and she leans over and says “What did he say?” :smack:

Not really much of an action movie, though.

Butch Cassidy also contains my favorite line, one I tend to get quite a bit of use of during the course of a debate season:

“Morons. I’ve got morons on my team.”

The Long Kiss Goodnight is sublime for one-liners. Though, otherwise, no one seems to have liked it.

“Shit, we gettin beaten up by the inventors of Scrabble.”

Damon Wayans, The Last Boy Scout

My favorite:

I have had it with these motha-fucking snakes on this motha-fucking plane!

There were a lot of things he could say. ‘Son of a bitch!’ would have been a good one. Or he could say, ‘Welcome to civilization!’ He could have said, ‘Laugh this one off!’ He might have said, ‘Fetch!’
But he didn’t, because if he had said any of those things then he’d have known that what he had just done was murder.

  • Terry Pratchett, showing his opinion of action movie one-liners in The Fifth Elephant.

Is it a one-liner if it is repeated?

An overlooked Arnold one-liner is in the movie “Eraser”. He shoots the alligator and then says, “You’re luggage.”

A one-liner to a dead alligator. Awesome.

“Look at the big brain on Brad.”

Jules in Pulp.

Which movie is that from?

Yeah, yeah.

“…which one is yours?” - Tim Roth

“…The one that say’s, ‘Bad Mother-Fucker’ on it” - Jules.

Different strokes and all that, but I thought that was the most over-stretched one-liner I’d ever heard. For me, it marked the end of Arnie as action hero.

From “The Matrix” – “I know kung fu.” “Show me.”

Classic. Just classic.

Were you there for Commando, Raw Deal, Red Heat – you know – the BAD stuff?

“You’re luggage” is what Arnold made his bones on. . .not “hasta la vista, baby.”

We need guns… lots of guns

I’ve seen them all. Several times. DH is a HUGE fan.

“I’ll be back” is what he’s known for, though. Heck, they’ve even got a classical music based joke from that one.
