" Suspect is dead after car was driven into Detroit-area synagogue, source says"
A suspect is dead after a car drove into a Detroit-area synagogue Thursday, a federal law enforcement official briefed on the incident told CNN.
When the suspect came to the synagogue, security saw him and engaged him in gunfire, Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard told reporters near the scene.
Schools in the area have been evacuated, and residents were being asked to shelter in place, Bouchard added.
This is my neighborhood- it’s a few miles from where I live. I just now learned about this and turned on the news barely 5 minutes ago, so I’m just now learning what happened. Apparently there were no injuries besides the shooter, so thank God for that, if that preliminary news turns out to be true.
It’s great that the installed security apparently did their job and took out the threat right away, but sad and sickening that it’s necessary to require that level of security in synagogues.
(Incidentally, a few months ago, I drove past the local synagogue in the Connecticut town where my parents live and was surprised to see what appeared to be a security guard outside. That seemed weird to me but it’s apparently a necessity now.)
From an interview with Sheriff Mike Bouchard just now: someone breached the Temple by driving a vehicle through the doors. Security shot at the driver. Something apparently ignited within the vehicle, causing the fire that caused the smoke that could be seen from outside the building. The driver was killed, but it’s unclear if it was by security shooting, or to do with the crash and fire. One of the security guards was injured in the initial crash, taken to the hospital, but will be ok.
I can’t here to post what i read in the NYT, but it’s basically the same as this. I think not much is known. Thankfully, not many people at the synagogue were hurt.
Fox 2 Detroit is saying it was a Lebanese man from Dearborn Heights whose family was killed by Israeli bombs this past weekend.
My wife’s uncle is a Lebanese man. Who lives in Dearborn Heights. He wasn’t the shooter, but I grew up in neighboring Dearborn and know plenty of Arabic people in the area who still have family in the Middle East so i imagine there’s going to be a lot more anger coming out of this community in the weeks ahead. I’m afraid this “excursion” is going to radicalize more than just Iranians.
