Activision sues Viacom over Star Trek, or lack thereof

story

Apparently, Activision was under the impression Viacom would chuck out new Trek movies like rabbits chuck out babies, and are now suing for breach of contract. Apparently, without a new movie every two years, us geeks suddenly don’t buy everything Trek we see.

So now Paramount gets criticised for raping the franchise, and sued if they don’t!

It would be nice to see the original license agreement. The article doesn’t make it clear exactly what kind of promises Viacom/Paramount made to Activision regarding the franchise when the deal was signed.

Also,Gamespot states than Activision “claims that Viacom recently admitted that there are no current plans for new Star Trek movies” that would mean a very long hiatus from the ST franchise. OK, Nemisis wasn’t exactly a huge hit but you would think someone would be thinking about the way to revitalise the series.

Then again, it could just be a Case of Sour Grapes of Activision’s part.

Bah. I don’t know about computer games but all Trek console games have sucked majorly. Maybe with more time between movies, Activision can make a good one for once.

Some of the Star Trek computer games were good.

There was also an old NES Star Trek game (original crew) that was pretty good as well.

Hasn’t Activision ever heard of Lucasart? They managed to exploit the Star Wars franchise quite happily during the twenty year gap between films.

Mind you, you would think that Viacom didn’t need to much encouragement to keep milking the cash cow.
