Braga said that the next movie will be about the Romulan Wars, but it won’t be an Enterprise movie.
Hmmm…
Well, on its face, I think a movie about the Romulan Wars might be good. The issue has to be addressed. But would this really be a movie with no familiar characters in it? A stand-alone film with no connection to any TV series? Certainly the franchise needs some new ideas, but this sounds awful dicey. Better to address the issue in Enterprise and make a movie out of the climax to the story arc, I say.
Put Star Trek to sleep for a few years, let everyone who currently works on it “move on to other oppurtunities,” wait until someone who respects the material and can come up with reasonably intelligent plots comes along, and then think about making new material.
I’m dissapointed in Star Trek. STTNG and especially DS9 were pretty good, for pulpish space fantasy. I lost interest in Enterprise and Voyager pretty damn quickly, and don’t bother with the movies any more. I’m not a die hard fan, just a casual viewer who hasn’t been engaged by it in a while. I don’t have high hopes for this movie.
Well, it will be interesting to see how they explain away the many inconsistencies between Balance of Terror and the rest of the canon - such as not having visual communication, or even warp drive. Remember the Romulan there had impulse power only, and it was not due to the cloaking device.
I agree they should give it a rest for a couple of years. The time between the end of TOS and the first movie really was good for ST.
I agree. It’s fallen too much into a “Generic Sci-Fi Stuff” style, rather than its original Western-in-Space kind of dealie. Even The Next Generation’s disgustingly exaggerated future optimism and Exploration theme has been brushed away.
I say tuck it on a shelf and leave it for five years. After that, hire someone like J. Michael Straczynski (who HAS expressed an interest in helming Trek) to rebuild things from scratch.
I concur with the consensus. Star Trek should rest for a while. Some time needs to be taken before another movie as good as or better than “The Wrath of Khan” can be made. There is so much more that can come, if people are imaginative, creative, and patient enough.
If they’re going to make any pretense of respecting continuity, then a Romulan Wars movie would almost certainly suck. They’ll never see a Romulan in person, and from Spock’s little history lesson, we know that the war basically consisted of the humans and Romulans blasting away at each other with nukes until everyone finally said “Enough,” and they made a truce.
And if the movie throws continuity out the window (which I fear will be the case), then I don’t want to see it.
I’m torn between orgasmic joy and cautious cynicism. As a diehard Romulan fanboy, this is almost a dream come true but I just can’t believe that Berman and Braga could do the Romulan Wars justice.
In addition, I just don’t think it would do well in the theatres since most fans would rather see a TNG movie or something about the Klingons. Again.
And besides, a season devoted to the war would be so much better than just a two hour movie.
Not to mention the inconsistency with “A Piece of the Action”, where the claim was made that at the time of the Romulan war, “They didn’t have subspace radio in those days.”
Will Shatner ever do anything else with Star Trek? He hasn’t touched the franchise in a decade. I know he’s 73 now but it would be cool to see Captain Kirk one more time at least.
If Kirk returns, it will have to be in the past. Remember, he’s dead in the Trek World. Because it would have to be in the past, it would likely happen in Enterprise, which would mean that series would become even more convoluted and paradoxical.
True. It would serve to screw up the series even more, and would have the benefit of throwing in a convenient plot twist. Star Trek is getting annoying.
Kirk was killed in a TNG movie a few years after the TOS movies ended. Since there are no movies centered around any of his contemporaries (one of which is dead and another one is dying), there’s no point in bringing him back from the dead. If he shows up, it’ll be pre-Generations.
I’m not fond of the idea but it’s possible that it might work out okay. Both Spock and Scotty appearing on TNG were quite well done. Using Kirk on Enterprise would be pushing the gimmick to its limits but I’ll reserve judgement until it happens, if it even does.
I’ll add my voice to that of the people who say, “Let it lie fallow for a decade or so, then try again with a different bunch of people.” It’s been mined to death. No one gives a doggy doodle any more except for the hardest-core, most rabid fanboys. Even I got tired of mining the coal for diamonds back in Enterprise’s first season. And I LIKE Scott Bakula!
I do kind of wonder how much of the current sterility of the show is due to Berman, and how much is due to Paramount, though. The show, concept, franchise, and all that is very much a cash cow, and I wouldn’t be surprised to find that Berman isn’t being allowed to do a whole lot, for fear of rocking the boat. Then again, I’m in no position to know.
As I posted in the other thread, it’s not the franchise that is the problem. It was the Bergama. With Manny in charge, I expect things to be different. :dubious:
Trek won’t die off of TV anytime soon. It’s too much a part of American TV. Goodness, almost 40 yrs of Star Trek, and the fans have yet to tire of it completely.
Mark my words, if ENT fails after Season IV, it will only be a couple of seasons at most before a new Trek is on the air. Trek is basic TV now.
