The former Kid in the Hall and star of “NewsRadio” and “A Bug’s Life” was in last summer’s surprisingly good “Sky High.” But, dear Lord, what’s happened to him? He’s a lot plumper and a lot grayer; not nearly so boyish anymore. Looks like he’s aged a decade or two in just a few years. What gives?
About a decade or two, really. He’s filled out pretty gradually. Over the run of Newsradio, he spread out a bit.
A couple years went by and he aged as you expect. By his appearance in Monkeybone, middle age was definitely there. Another five years passed, and while he worked straight through it, most of the time it was on projects that were easy to miss,
I think the thing is that the image of him in The Kids in the Hall kind of sticks as the “default Dave.” That was almost twenty years ago, though, when he still managed to pull of “unexpectedly hot” in the guise of a French-Canadian hooker. That’s the image of Dave that I’ll always carry with me. (Stop looking at me like that.)
Most of the time on Newsradio, he had figure-concealing wardrobe – because that’s just the way business fashion is, and that’s what his character wore.
In short, tempus fugit. (Oh my God, I’m old, too.)
Dave Foley was in Stark Raving Mad, which was co-written and -directed by our own Anamorphic. The first time we watched the movie with Anamorphic, we asked him if that was in fact Dave Foley, or someone who ate Dave Foley and stole his face.
Pretty much what Larry said. I can’t think of any other examples off-hand just now, but I’ve noticed that a lot of guys who have that 12-year-old boy look tend not to age all that well. Basically, they’ll look ridiculously young until they hit their late 30s to early 40s, then all of a sudden middle age hits and they look even older than they actually are. If you look at Dave Foley’s IMDB entry, he’s almost 43, so while he doesn’t necessarily look great for his age (especially compared to say Johnny Depp, who’s a few months younger but probably has some decrepit-looking picture of himself hidden away in the attic), he’s not that bad either. Besides, by this point it would be even worse, or at least creepier, if he still looked like he was 12.
I had this discussion with a friend a few years ago when Mia Sara was on that Birds of Prey show.
“She looks ancient man!” I was told.
“No she doesn’t you idiot, she’s only 35. When was the last time she was in anything really memorable? Ferris Bueller’s Day Off was 15 years ago when she was 20. If you don’t see someone in 15 years of course they look really old.”
“Yeah, I guess you’re right.”
Of all the Kids in the Hall, though, Foley was the most attractive woman.
I always thought Dave was surprisingly sexy on Newsradio. He was believable in the love scenes on that show – he looked like a good kisser, and he seemed like, watching him those scenes, he’d be good in bed. Judging from those love scenes, I’ve always thought of Dave as a sexier guy than many really good-looking actors. Matthew McConaughey, for instance, is gorgeous, but I’ve never seen him in a love scene that gave me the sense that he was a good lover, or even a good kisser. I’ve always thought that taking Matthew to bed would be like opening a huge, beautifully-wrapped present and finding socks inside. Sleeping with Dave, on the other hand, would be more like opening a plain brown paper sack and finding a big fat diamond ring.
The ‘sexy’ thing hasn’t held up in subsequent roles – probably just because he’s done quirky-character-things rather than romantic-lead-things (which is really what he was in Newsradio – at least for the first few seasons).
Anyway, although I haven’t seen Sky High (is it out on dvd yet?), I took a look at the IMDB photo gallery and he looks fine in the latest photos there. There are a few from an AIDs benefit, so that’s how he looks in real life, I guess, not glammed up for an opening, or weirded up for a character. A bit grayer and a bit heavier than he was 20 years ago, but aren’t we all? I’ll bet he’s still pretty good in bed, too – maybe I’ll email his wife and ask her!
Hell, yes! Smart, sassy, soft but not weak . . . does Dave have a sister? (Now I’m remembering the confusing feelings that Sandy Duncan as Peter Pan caused me to have when I was twelve.)
