I agree that this board is well moderated and liberal in its rules. There are boards out there on which any criticism of moderator decisions is forbidden. Complaints bring an instant ban. We are indeed fortunate both in our moderators and the quality of our members.
There’s another board I post on sometimes where one of the rules is no discussion of politics. At one point, I made a comment that while the Nazis were bad, most of them weren’t as bad as Hitler himself (and yes, that was relevant to the topic of discussion, and no, I wasn’t comparing any poster or other real person to a Nazi). That earned me an infraction.
Of course the moderation on this board is far more civilized and adult. That is a big part of why this board is what it is, and why I’m on it.
That in no way dilutes the truth of the fact that it should be even more so and that we’re entitled to it. It’s not about “how the moderation of the Straight Dope Message Board™, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Chicago Reader and Sun-Times Media etc etc” should be implemented; it’s about how communication is best facilitated. It’s about the best possible implementation of that. It’s the itch to have that in our lives which brings (and keeps) many of us here, and it actually is an entitlement, whether recognized by people at large or not.
Bad as gfaqs mods are, they aren’t even close to the hive of scum and villainy at some places. I hesitate to name names in interest of what I’m sure some rule here has in interest of preventing wars with other boards, but I’m sure Samwise Gamgee’s old man could point you that way. If people think the mods here are liberally biased, my gosh, that place bans anyone with even a hint of being opposed to leftist views in their posts. I appreciate that the mods here at least make the attempt (and usually succeed) at modding based on the rules and not who they disagree with or dislike.
