The ad banner at the bottom of the page seems to now keep the focus of the navigation buttons on Mozilla, current version. When you hit the back navigation button, the advertisement seems to reload and the SDMB doesn’t respond.
Don’t know if this is a feature or a bug.
The ad seems to come from google. It scrolls to a new ad each 20 seconds or so.
Don’t know it matters but, latest version of Windows 10.
Sorry everyone, just got to work. It seems to be an advertisement from Google Ad Services. I flush out all the tracking files I get at the end of the day with CCleaner, so the advertisements tend to be whatever Google serves up based on what I am searching for work. I want to say that the advertisements I saw last were about some pneumatic ethanol pumps. The advertisements change on a scrolling basis about each 20 seconds. I played with it after I posted yesterday, and it seems to my amateur-ten-years-ago computer sense that the problem with the navigation buttons seem to pop up after it did its first bottom banner change.
I am going to pay for the membership later on this week now that I got paid at work, but I will keep it ad based and continue to play with the problem.
Also, right now, there are no advertisements on this page. I am not sure what that is about.
When I was playing with it yesterday it didn’t seem to matter what the advertisement was specifically, but the advertisement seemed to come from either adservices.google.com (I think, its where the link would take me if I clicked on it.)
If I clicked on the back button six or seven times really fast, I could get the browser to “go back” before the advertisement loaded.
I tried to duplicate what was going on with you in Firefox. I think I saw the advertisement you’re talking about – there was a giant yellow banner for Glad Bags that filled the entire length of the bottom, that’s what i saw – and when you clicked to dismiss the ad it showed a message underneath about Google Ads. Then it reloaded the Glad Bags ad again.
When I clicked to close the ad again everything went away and the ads did not return.
This was with me signed out of the board and having the same experience as any unpaid Guest would have, using the most recent version of Mozilla Firefox.
I was able to click to other threads on the board, etc., no problem. Board functionality did not appear to be affected.
I’ll get time to go around the SDMB a little later on today, and if I get the problem to repeat, I will do a screen shot of it and email it to you if you want if that might help.
I did a Windows Defender update last night before I left work, and I haven’t seen the problem again. I have no idea how that would be connected, but I will keep looking at it.
There’s a good possibility it might have been a miscoding with the original ad that got caught and corrected while we were sorting things out. Stranger things have happened. So nothing we could see except that it was there and now maybe it’s not.
Thank you for reporting problems to us; we hope everyone does so when they see something. We want your experience here to be as good as it can be.
The problem is back with the advertisements overtaking emphasis and not allowing the navigational buttons on the browser to work. Right now, on this view that I have the advertisement went from City Market to Morning Song Bird Food Class Action Settlement. Its served by “google ad services”.
I can bang the back button like seven times really fast and it will catch before the advertisement loads. Quick question, does the SDMB get paid for each load of the advertisement? Because if it works that way, I have loaded 49 advertisements clicking around trying to get out of MPSIMS.
It just happened again after my post, trying to back out of this thread. When I hit the back button, “invalid” popped up where the advertisement was. When the advertisement scrolled to its change, it is now for M&T manufacturing “classic vdub parts”
