"Ad populum" statements

Is there a special term for a “negative” *ad populum *statement?

A typical *ad populum *statement would be “Most people like X, so it must be good,” since the value of X is determined by its popularity. But what of a typical elitist statement, like “Most people like X, so it must be bad.” That statement also asserts that the value of X is determined by its (un)popularity. Is it still considered an *ad populum *argument, or does it have a special name?

(I realize I should be talking about arguments, not statements, but I’m trying to simplify things.)

50 Million Elvis Fans Can’t Be Wrong. That was the title of an album of The King’s IIRC, a best of sort of album. Now yes, it is ad populum and they could be wrong. But it was Elvis, who was really talented, so they weren’t. But had they said, say, Justin Bieber, they might have been wrong. Not that I know anything about Justin Bieber.

Thanks, that’s exactly what I was looking for.
