Adapting Tabletop Games for Live Action

I’m working on a plan to adapt the Wheel of Time roleplaying game into live-action–only I don’t know how. Has anyone out there successfully adapted a game to LARP without incessant dice-rolling and inconvenience? Any hints?

Thank you!

Sorry, not much use here, the only LARP I have done was designed from scratch and wasn’t based on a series of books.

however,

it seems you should be able to adapt basic LARP combat settings - with characters having points in certain skills. In the LARP I have played, depending on your strenghth skill etc you shouted a certain number when you hit someone. they deducted their remaining armour points from this number and took it as damage.

your main problems would seem to be blade mastery and channeling. you could get around the channeling by having stock spells, but that would negate the charm of channeling to som extent. Keep us posted on how you get on

Further thought.

The magic system in the LARP I have played was geared so that the higher level spells took longer to cast.

for instance basic level one spell

“By the power of earth I cause you to STICK”

higher level spell

“By the power of Earth, I summon forth the power, to bring down my foes, by creating an EARTHQUAKE”

(I know my imagination sucks)

In a WOT setting that could be trabsformed to

Basic spell

“I weave fire into a light”

More complicated

“I weave many thick strands of Fire into a braid with thinner elements of Earth and a few strands of Spirit and cas the web of explosion at my enemy”
Generally the more powerful the spell, the longer the description required in order to increase the casting time.

I like the increased casting time idea. I have a very vague idea about rolling stats for each of the five affinities, and rather than selecting talents and weaves, channelers can do any weave that they have a high enough score in all necssary affinities for. That made sense in my head–not so much as I type it out.

I also have to deal with the possibility that the gentlemen players will decide to eschew combat rounds in favor of attacking each other with boffer weapons and seeing who wins, but that cuts out all the channelers, unless they’re just yelling spells out in the background, and maybe throwing rocks. And some of my potential channelers have good aim–I’d be concerned with the throwing.

For more annoyance, I have to consider the fact that we’re going to be doing this in a crowded, touristy area, where maybe one person in one hundred is actually playing. I think that’s what will make it extra-fun.

I’ve found a couple online LARP guides, so hopefully I can make some headway with my Gaming Guru soon. I’ll keep you posted on developments.
