Add additional dollar to speeding ticket fine = no points (urban legend?)

Got the letter today! Boo-yeah!! I managed to successfully contest the speeding ticket I got a few months ago.

Actual dialogue in my house today:

“You know, you WERE speeding, Ink.”
“Entirely beside the point! Radar is unreliable, the cop was rude to me, and besides, I didn’t like his little mustache”.

So folks, it does pay to take it to court.

Anyway, back when I was asking friends how I should deal with the aforementioned ticket, somebody feeds me this scheme:

“When your paying off the ticket, add an extra dollar to the check. That way the state sends you a check reimbursing you for that extra dollar. Until you cash the one-dollar check the case technically remains unresolved, and the state can’t report it as a conviction to your insurance provider. Voila! No added points.”

Has that “Hmmm…Sounds plausible --in theory at least” vibe that makes for a good Urban Legend. Anybody heard of this? Couldn’t find anything about it at the Snopes site.

It’s a UL.

Sigh

If it sound too good to be true…

Inky- it only works if you send the extra dollar privately to me†. Contact me via e-mail and I will instruct you on the payment method. I take Visa, Discover and MasterCard.
† I have my contacts at the DMV.

The whole UL is based on a faulty understanding of computers and programming. Yes, a program could be written to do just what the the UL says but that would be the most clumsy and error prone way to write a program. It’s not impossible that somewhere there is a court system database that has such a foolish construct but I consider it highly unlikely. More likely that establishing points on your driving record and fulfillment of the fine are independant functions.
